It was a sad day in April when Jim Carrey, during the promotions for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, revealed that he wished to retire. With numerous fans across the world, Carrey’s trajectory in Hollywood has been inspirational, starting with supporting roles to eventually playing the lead in many projects. It was beautiful to see the man rise to fame on the basis of his talents and potential in comedy alone.

Carrey told Access Hollywood that he wishes to step away from the spotlight. He made the decision because he liked a quiet life with his family and wanted to have some peace in life. Carrey continued,

I really like my quiet life, and I really love putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life, and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.

This was not the first time the actor shared his plans for retirement. Back in 2018, Carrey revealed that he did not like the shift in the industry with production houses and corporates taking over the reins in creative projects. He wanted to distance himself from that noise and have the sanctity of the work remain alive in his life.

In the same interview, the host asked Carrey if he would ever return to the big screens. The actor has always believed in making an impact on the world and then respecting the same by doing whatever one can. Talking about a possible return on only one condition, Carrey shared,

If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink, that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I’m taking a break.

It seems like the golden script came sooner than fans imagined as Carrey is returning to movies with Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The actor understands the travails of the movie business and knows how important his character is to the franchise.

It comes as no surprise that he will not leave the movie hanging and be an eternal part of the franchise. With a collective $725.2 million gross collection, the studio must have also done a great deal to convince Carrey to come back.

The actor is worth $180 million currently, making him one of the most well-off actors from the 1990s and early 2000s era. He minted money at that time with successful roles and projects that fans loved. As comedy boomed in the Hollywood scene, Carrey’s popularity also surged simultaneously.

Carrey proved to Hollywood that one did not need biceps or insanely dashing looks to thrive in the industry. He pivoted the attention from heartthrobs to heavy talent with his comedy and impersonations, making him a fan favorite almost overnight.

Since the 2014 failure of his sequel to Dumb and Dumber, Carrey has been slowly inching away from the spotlight and only doing films he truly believes in.
