The decision to end Superman and Lois after season 4 has saddened fans across the franchise. The CW show detailed the life and adventures of the couple as they move to Smallville with their kids. It was expected that the show would have another season that would seamlessly wrap up the story, but alas, season 4 is going to be the last one for the show.

There are a few reasons behind this decision since there are various stakeholders involved. From the new DC universe helmed by James Gunn to the budget it took to make the series, let’s explore why Superman and Lois will not have another season.

Superman and Lois has enjoyed great ratings and a fanbase that has continually liked the show. So the decision of the show’s unexpected conclusion with season 4 has taken fans by surprise. However, it was decided by Warner Bros to keep Superman and Lois limited to 4 seasons since a new age for the DC universe is being ushered in by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The creative filmmaker is charting a unique path for the franchise with more eccentric and innovative characters taking center stage. Gunn’s DCU will begin with Superman, starring David Corenswet. The decision to end Superman and Lois is attributed to giving Gunn’s Superman a bigger platform to start a story that will form the foundation for the upcoming chapter of the stories.

Budget cuts were said to be one of the reasons, too, which made Superman and Lois not the most attractive property. Entertainment chief at CW, Brad Schwartz, explained in relation to DC shows in general, and Superman and Lois in particular,

As we look forward and try to make this network bigger and profitable, frankly, as much as we all love those shows and they had their time, they’re not working on linear. Superman & Lois, creatively, is very strong. It does well in broadcast, it does well in digital… but it’s expensive [and] doesn’t make money for us. And we don’t have the rights to the prior seasons. You need to have a library [for people to find a show]… and the prior seasons are [on Max].

Moreover, Warner Bros. wished to avoid competition between the Superman properties that might have run side by side by next year had they renewed the show for another season. This would have confused fans and led them to pit the two ventures against one another.

Entertainment chief at CW, Brad Schwartz, has already experienced how the show ends and he assures fans that it’s incredible. Calling the season highly emotional and moving, Schwartz hints at Superman and Lois featuring some deaths in the final moments of the show.

Lois Lane actress Elizabeth Tulloch put a seal to the hint and shared,

There are deaths involved. It’s very epic. We’re going out with a bang. In the end, there are actually very, very high stakes.

Though the show was initially seen as a spinoff of Supergirl, it eventually became a part of the standalone universe and managed to garner a massive fanbase. Fans can enjoy the fourth season of Superman and Lois which is currently ongoing.
