Why Wally West Has To Save [THIS] Version Of Superman Across Reality Itself?
SPOILER WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Flash Forward #1. It is by Scott Lobdell, Brett Booth, Norm Rapmund & Evan Shaner, on sale now.
Superman is undoubtedly one of the most powerful figures in the entirety of the DC Universe. While the original Clark Kent version of the character has proven to be the most popular, but there are other versions of the hero as well. One such version now has a vital role to play in the continued survival of the multiverse. In Flash Forward #1, disgraced superhero Wally West is recruited to save Calvin Ellis from certain death. Calvin Ellis is President Superman of another world. But the question is- why is this version of Superman important enough to send Wally speeding across the DC Multiverse?
Who Is President Superman?
President Calvin Harris, aka Kalel is the Superman of Earth-23. He was the first to be introduced during the Final crisis by Grant Morrison and Doug Manhke. The character again reappeared in Morrison’s run on Action Comics during the New 52 and also during Multiversity. An important thing to note about this character is that he uses a reprogrammed and rehabilitated version of Brainiac to help protect his entire world.
President Superman plays a huge role in the greater multiverse as well. Calvin is a founding member of Justice Incarnate which is equivalent to the Justice League. They are an inter-reality peace keeping force and they act from their HQ called the House of Heroes within Orrey of Worlds. This makes Calvin a very important version of Superman in the entire multiverse.
Why Is President Superman Needed Now?
The main issue here is that the Dark Multiverse is trying to corrupt pieces of the main multiverse. Multiversal figure Tempus Fuginaut determines that there’s one specific world which is destroying the barriers of the two planes of existence. As a result, Tempus decides to break his vow of non interference to try and save everything. This is why he recruits Wally West. Readers will remember that Wally had been imprisoned after it was revealed that he was responsible for many deaths at the Sanctuary in Heroes In Crisis. Despite Wally’s protests, Tempus sends him across the multiverse to help a wounded President Superman in battle.
It looks like President Superman needed the help too since he appears to have been badly injured. Given his typical impervious status, his injuries are a concern. It certainly seems like someone strong like the Dark Multiverse’s Batman or Doomsday attacked him.
But the need to save and recruit Calvin Ellis to protect the multiverse speaks of the magnitude of the danger Tempus fears. Along with Calvin, the Justice Incarnate is bound to get involved as well, which will surely result in a conflict of immense proportions. Calvin Ellis and his version of Justice League deal with the multiverse and alternate realities. So it makes sense that Tempus would need his help in beating back the spreading of the Dark Multiverse. With Calvin, there might be a chance to save the multiverse after all.
Flash Forward #2 is scheduled to be released on October 16.
