Wish to land a job at Amazon? Here’s 3 questions Jeff Bezos’ Execs judge you by
Believing that hiring talented people is “the single most important element” for steering the company towards success, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos recommended his team of executives to consider three crucial questions before offering them a place in the team.
In a 1998 letter addressed to various shareholders, employees, and customers, he credited his employee’s hard work and the company’s high bars of selection and hiring of these talented employees as the reason for the team’s strength. Wishing to keep improving the quality and strength of the team, he implemented hiring policies that ensured the company’s future baton-bearers to keep them in the track of the upward trajectory. The executives were asked to mull over 3 crucial questions, to identify the extraordinary candidates, before extending job offers.
Well, you can consider this article a treat because we’re letting you in on the three boxes you need to tick off to get through the line of hiring managers.
‘WILL YOU ADMIRE THIS PERSON?’
As a man who believes life is short and one should spend it around people they love or admire, he encouraged his team to bring the same trail of thought into the office as well by asking them to look out for candidates who they will admire. By comparing candidates to people they admired in their own lives, the company could be assured to have teams with high bonhomie work-group solidarity as people would only work to the best of their abilities in a team when they’re around people who they find positively stimulating.
‘WILL THIS PERSON RAISE THE AVERAGE LEVEL OF EFFECTIVENESS OF THE GROUP THEY’RE ENTERING?’
This question settles the fact that they’re looking for people who are driven towards lifting the company to its zenith.
Bezos believed in fighting entropy by continuously trying to set up the highest benchmark. This keeps the fire of competition alive in the present executives and those who wish to become one in the near future.
The better you can show how drawn you are towards your work, the easier it will be for them to identify you as an integral addition to the team.
‘ALONG WHAT DIMENSION MIGHT THIS PERSON BE A SUPERSTAR?’
Bezos revealed that he likes to work with people having “unique skills, interests, and perspectives that enrich the work environment for all of us”, even if they weren’t related to their job specifications.
Remember Chandler from F.R.I.E.N.D.S.? They’re looking for a ‘Chandler’ who can deal with Monica-ish situations.
So you need to pull up our A-game and show ‘em how unique you are- with all your quirks and eccentricities.
So Suit up, Lads/Ladies and put your best smile on!
