“You should try to look sexier”: Julianne Moore Became Insecure About Her Red Hair and Freckles After Facing Sexism in Hollywood
It has recently come to light that veteran actor Julianne Moore was once judged harshly on her appearance. During the early years of her Hollywood career, she opened up about being asked to look “pretty”. Being a natural redhead she already had insecurities concerning it, and the comment only made it worse for her. The Clue actor also added that even though the industry is based to a certain extent on physicality however beauty is subjective.
Moore could not avoid the sexist comment that female celebrities usually get. She once shared how people were commenting about her aging gracefully. According to her, such types of comments or remarks are inherently filled with judgments.
Julianne Moore Shares She was Judged For Her Looks
In a recent interview with The Times UK, among many topics, Julianne Moore discussed the existing judgments against people’s appearance in the industry. She shared that during the early days of her career, she got judged by an insider about her looks. She shared that an industry person once said to her, “You should try to look prettier”. And according to her that made her already existing insecurities worse.

Statistically, red hairs only make up 2 percent of the population which makes them a minority in terms of hair color. Moreover Hollywood prefers blondes for the most part therefore it sure impacted Moore’s confidence. In the entertainment industry, female actors receiving such sexist remarks is a usual occurrence. She further added,
“Obviously, ours is a business where there is some physicality involved, but beauty and prettiness are subjective.”
Moore did admit to desiring blonde hair and a tanned body on some occasions however at present she shared that red hair and freckles are what she identified with. Seemingly being more knowledgeable now insecurities about her natural aspects has no chance to surface.
She Also Faced Sexist Comments About Aging
After getting judgments against her natural appearance while starting out in the industry, Julianne Moore was inevitably judged about her aging. Back in 2021, the 62-year-old actor talked about her dislike of the comment “aging gracefully”. The Clue actor shared in an As If magazine interview,
“There’s so much judgement inherent in the term ‘ageing gracefully,’”
According to her, there were no positive or negative aspects to aging. Moore questioned whether there was an “ungraceful” way of aging. Further, she added people aging was a natural process that everyone has to undergo. Therefore there is no point in saying someone aged gracefully or otherwise according to the actor.
