What’s making fans lose their minds isn’t just the film lineup, but also the big-name directors and the creative spark setting things on fire. Gunn, known for his eclectic taste, is assembling a team of directing wizards that might just rival Thanos’s hunt for the Infinity Stones!

Among the most intriguing news is the rumored involvement of the acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino. Imagine his signature style melding with the superhero world! Intriguing, right?

According to TheInSneider, Luca Guadagnino, the genius behind the Oscar-winning film Call Me by Your Name, is reportedly eyeing a directorial debut in James Gunn’s and Peter Safran’s DCU.

The buzz is that Guadagnino might team up with his Challengers and Queer screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes for a film adaptation of Sgt. Rock. For those who might not know, Sgt. Rock is a gritty, WWII-set comic series featuring a tough-as-nails sergeant battling against the odds.

Guadagnino is reportedly at the top of Gunn and Safran’s wish list. While it’s still up in the air which project would be a perfect fit for his style, a few potential candidates are The Authority (which includes a gay romance, his specialty) and Teen Titans.

The director’s unique, emotionally charged storytelling set against the backdrop of historical warfare could be a cinematic feast. Kevin Feige, heads up! Of course, the DCU has more in store with high-profile projects like James Mangold’s Swamp Thing and Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Could Guadagnino’s touch bring a fresh, poignant edge to the DCU? Only time will tell! But that’s not all—there’s another filmmaker who’s still dreaming of directing a Batgirl flick.

In another superhero twist, Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn is still keeping his Batgirl dreams alive. The mastermind behind visually stunning films like Drive, expressed his desire to direct a Batgirl movie in an interview with Business Insider back in 2016. He said:

You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl.

While the Batgirl movie he was interested in never came to fruition, his recent comments suggest that the idea still holds a special place in his heart. In a candid interview with THR, Refn admitted that he’s still open to the idea if the right opportunity comes along, saying:

Sure I’ll make Batwoman, or Batgirl, whatever it’s called, if it came my way.

Refn could be the perfect pick to bring Batgirl to life. With his knack for genre hits like the Pusher trilogy (hello, Mads Mikkelsen!), why not let him shake things up in Gotham with Barbara Gordon?

It’s clear that the director’s passion for the project is as strong as ever. Fans of Refn’s work might just get their wish to see him bring his dark, stylish flair to a Batgirl movie.

Superman is kicking off the new DC Universe. You can catch the film in theaters on July 11, 2025.
