Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos’ 2023 movie Poor Things, starring actress Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, and more, was one of the most successful films of 2023. The movie based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray not only received positive reactions from critics and the audience but was also named one of the top movies of 2023.

Emma Stone’s performance as Bella Baxter was highly lauded by the critics and the audience, and the actress won the Best Actress Award at the 96th Academy Awards. And now the Greek filmmaker is set to reunite with the actress along with Jesse Plemons for his next movie.

Yorgos Lanthimos walked the red carpet at the world premiere of his movie Kinds of Kindness at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2024. The movie stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Joe Alwyn, and more. It is said to consist of three distinct but loosely connected stories. Collider reports that the movie has received a positive response from the critics with special mention for Plemons’ performance. 

However, Deadline has reported that Lanthimos is already looking forward to his next project. It is titled Bugonia and is a remake of the South Korean sci-fi comedy movie Save the Green Planet. Not only is the filmmaker thrilled to be working on the project, but he is also excited to be reuniting with Stone and Plemons once again.

The publication reports that Focus Features has taken worldwide rights for the movie and will release it in the United States with Universal Pictures. Talking about the collaboration with the filmmaker, Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said,

Yorgos Lanthimos is a cinematic visionary with a singular style that has captivated audiences worldwide. We could not be more excited to partner with him, Emma, and the incredible team at Element, Square Peg, and CJ ENM to reimagine this twisted and darkly funny story.

Producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures also shared with the publication that they are looking forward to working with the brilliant team at Focus Features. The producers are also delighted to be reuniting with the filmmakers, Stone and Jesse, along with the great crew.

Jerry Kyoungboum Ko of CJ ENM, who is also one of the producers of the upcoming movie, shared that he is thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of a story rooted in Korean cinema’s hidden gem. He added that he is assured that the filmmaker, along with the crew, is going to ignite a dynamic chemical fusion.

Fans react to Yorgos Lanthimos’ casting for Bugonia

Deadline reported that the upcoming movie is going to follow two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company. The young men are said to be convinced that the CEO is an alien intent on destroying the planet.

As soon as the announcement of Bugonia was shared, fans couldn’t contain their reaction to the cast of the movie. They were quick to share their views on social media, appreciating the filmmaker’s decision to reunite with Stone and Plemons.
