The latest action blockbuster from Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is The Elusive Samurai, one of the many new anime that will be released as part of the wave hitting for the Summer 2024 anime season.

Shonen Jump has been making a lot of waves with its anime debuts this year, so it will obviously draw a lot of attention. Fortunately, it won’t be too long before we see it in action. The Elusive Samurai will have its formal debut in Japan on July 6th, although it is not yet clear if an official English-language release will follow in North America.

After the massacre of his family by the traitor Ashikaga Takauji, Tokiyuki flees with the help of a handful of loyal retainers who have also survived the purge. One of them is Suwa Yorishige, an ally of the Hojo clan and lord of Suwa Province. The slightly odd Yorishige also claims to be clairvoyant and foretells that Tokiyuki will one day become the ruler of Japan. But for the moment, escaping from enemy territory is the priority!

Matsui, who is best known for his manga Assassination Classroom, returned to Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in January 2021 with a new piece titled The Elusive Samurai. This was the author’s major comeback after a five-year break after finishing off Assassination Classroom, a manga that won praise from readers worldwide and was turned into an anime nearly ten years ago.

Known as Nige Jozu no Wakagimi in Japan, the original The Elusive Samurai manga by Yuusei Matsui is serialized by Shueisha in their Weekly Shonen Jump manga magazine, while VIZ Media has an English-language version of the manga.

At the animation company CloverWorks, Yuuta Yamazaki directs the TV anime. Yoriko Tomita composes the series, Yasushi Nishiya designs the characters, and Akiyuki Tateyama and GEMBI supply the soundtrack. Yamazaki is well-known for his work on the television series Wonder Egg Priority, Yuru Camp, and My Dress-Up Darling. Fans can anticipate a top-notch anime that keeps faithful to the manga’s plot and characters thanks to his experience and knowledge.
