The Harry Potter Book in Which JK Rowling Almost Gave Emma Watson’s Hermione a Sister: “I always planned that”
JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series is probably the most loved book series in the world. Every book of the Harry Potter series has been adapted into a movie and just like the books, all the movies are fans’ favorite too. In fact, Harry Potter is without a doubt the magnum opus of Rowling.
Emma Watson’s Hermione Granger could have got a magic sibling but JK Rowling’s delay couldn’t make it happen. The fourth book of the Harry Potter series could have welcomed Hermione’s sister. However, unfortunately, that didn’t happen due to a single reason. Rowling herself revealed why she that she left behind one plan that she had regarding the Harry Potter series.
JK Rowling Was Planning for Hermione Granger to Have a Sister
When Hermione Granger met Harry Potter and Ron Weasley for the first time aboard the Hogwarts Express, Hermione casually mentioned that there’s absolutely no one in her family who has some sort of magic skills. Though the statement seems random on the surface, it actually has a hidden hint.
JK Rowling, the creator of The Wizarding World, had a plan to introduce a sister of Hermione in the fourth book of the series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. In an interview with BBC back in 2004, she said (via Accio Quote):
“I always planned that Hermione would have a younger sister, but she’s never made an appearance and somehow it feels like it might be too late now.”

Rowling planned to introduce Hermione’s sister in the fourth book, but she couldn’t make it happen. When the fifth book of the series Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix came out, Rowling believed that it was too late. She was then hesitant to proceed with the plan. Consequently, Hermione never got her sibling.
What Would Hermione Granger’s Sister Be Like?
Although the truth is that due to some delay, Hermione’s sister never got introduced in any of the books, it still makes one wonder what the sister would have been like. There are a few possibilities, just theories of course, that picturize Hermione’s sister.
One of the first questions that comes to the table is whether Hermione’s sister would have been an absolute genius like Hermione or the complete opposite. Not just her capability, Rowling would have faced a lot of confusion while coming up with a good name for Hermione’s sister too.
On top of that, Hermione used to travel back and forth between the Muggle world and the Wizarding world throughout the series. If a sister had been introduced, Hermione’s role as a messenger would have come out as unnecessary. However, all these are mere theories and no one will ever get the answers as Rowling never explored that possibility.
