But before he became a Hollywood superstar, he faced a major setback in his career. There was a time when he lost a role to Tom Cruise that he felt he was perfect for. Instead of letting it hold him back, he turned it into an opportunity and found huge success in a different way.

Tom Cruise’s Role was a Dream for Dwayne Johnson

Many fans might be surprised to learn that Dwayne Johnson once campaigned heavily for a role that ultimately went to another action superstar. During a 2023 Instagram Q&A video, The Brahma Bull revealed his desire to play Jack Reacher the stoic ex-military police officer from Lee Child’s popular novels.

The role, eventually played by Tom Cruise in two films, resonated with Johnson due to his own strong physique and his admiration for the character. The superstar understands the way Hollywood often casts actors based on how they look. He mentioned that there aren’t many actors with a physique like his, so most of the roles he’s had were specially made for him. The actor went on to say:

“In Hollywood, actors are kind of like in a box… There are actors that can vie for a particular role because it allows for them to have a certain look, skin color, size, etc. Fortunately, for me, there aren’t a lot of guys at all who look like me. So, all of my roles, from the beginning of my career, I’ve been a lucky son of a b***h that they’ve been created and designed for me — except Jack Reacher.”

With Jack Reacher, the character was already established in the books, so it didn’t allow for the same creative freedom. At that time, the 51-year-old felt he was a perfect fit for the role due to his similar height (6’4″) and weight (280 lbs), as well as their shared tough persona. But, when he found out he didn’t get the role, he was disappointed.

Losing the Jack Reacher role was tough for The Rock, but it ended up being a pivotal moment for him. Shortly after, Universal Studios reached out with a role in Fast Five. While it might have seemed like a smaller gig compared to Jack Reacher, it had a big perk: The Hayward native could shape the character of Hobbs himself.

With this creative freedom, the professional wrestler added his own charm and humor to Hobbs, making him a beloved character and a key part of the popular Fast and Furious movies.

Years later, The Great One looked back on missing out on the Jack Reacher role with a positive outlook. He realized that playing a character with an established image might have limited his creative freedom. “I look back in gratitude that I didn’t get Jack Reacher,” he said in the same Instagram video, seeing it as a blessing.

Fans might be curious about how Rocky would have portrayed the serious sniper role, but there’s no overlooking how much the Fast and Furious series has boosted his career. There’s no denying that setbacks can actually open doors to new and unexpected opportunities!
