The Princess Diaries is a 2001 American coming-of-age comedy film directed by Garry Marshall and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Based on Meg Cabot’s 2000 young adult novel of the same name, the film was written by Gina Wendkos and stars Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, with Héctor Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall, and Robert Schwartzman rounding out the ensemble. Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway) is a timid American adolescent who discovers she is heir to the throne of a European country. Mia must decide whether to seize the throne she has inherited or surrender her title under the tutelage of her estranged grandmother (Andrews), the kingdom’s reigning title permanently. Cabot’s agency approached producer Debra Martin Chase about turning The Princess Diaries into a feature-length picture, a concept she proposed to Disney after reading the book, feeling sure about the novel’s cinematic potential. After acquiring the film rights, Disney first greenlit the movie under the title The Princess of Tribeca, before changing the setting from New York to San Francisco, where the majority of the film was shot between September and December 2000. Marshall, who was known for directing numerous romantic comedies, agreed to direct because he thought the plot was suitable for family viewing. Cabot was contacted regarding many modifications to the film’s narrative and characters, although he had minimal participation in its production. In her feature film debut, Hathaway beat out numerous established young actors, while The Princess Diaries marked the end of Andrews’ semi-retirement from acting and her comeback to Disney films, her first since Mary Poppins, 1964. The Princess Diaries debuted on July 29, 2001, at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, California, and was distributed in North American cinemas on August 3, 2001. The picture was a commercial success, grossing more than $165 million worldwide. Despite receiving mixed reviews for its narrative and issues, Hathaway’s performance received widespread appreciation from film reviewers. The Princess Diaries exceeded industry predictions, as critics predicted the picture would fail owing to its G-rating and subject content. The success of the picture is credited with establishing Hathaway as a bankable actress and resurrecting Andrews’ cinematic career. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, a sequel, was published in 2004 to comparable popularity, and speculation about a third instalment has lingered since 2015.
