Chris Pratt has been part of the MCU for a long time. He entered the franchise as Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, and instantly became a fan favorite with his Guardians of the Galaxy film series. On 5 May 2023, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released on the big screen. It marked the end of the James Gunn-helmed franchise. However, a surprising post-credits in the last film confirmed the return of Pratt’s Star-Lord.

Guardians 3 has grossed nearly $840 million worldwide and is now available to purchase digitally online. Gunn’s final MCU film is discussed in a director’s commentary that is available alongside the full-length movie. The director in the report shed light on the story plans for a 44-year-old-led Legendary Star-Lord movie.

At the end of Guardians 3, fans saw, “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return” on their screens. It confirmed that the actor was not yet done with the MCU.

Gunn revealed the film’s premises stating that it will revolve around Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to its environment. He said,

“Oh, but not quite over. We always want to give somebody a little something special. And Chris and I, forever, have talked about how great it would be to be able to do a ‘Legendary Star-Lord’ movie.”

Talking about the film’s plot, the DCU head added,

“A story with Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to the environment of Earth in the same way that somebody else might try to adapt to the alien environment of outer space. He’s a fish out of water in just kind of regular water. So I can’t wait to see it.”

A Chris Pratt solo film is an intriguing concept that might excite fans. There is a possibility that Gunn might not be writing and directing the film, as the new executive has his hands tied trying to get a new DC cinematic universe.

Frequently asked questions

Did James Gunn confirm Chris Pratt is done as Star-Lord after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

No. In the Vol. 3 director’s commentary, Gunn said Star-Lord’s story is "not quite over," echoing the film’s post-credits tag that "The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return." So while the Guardians team disbanded on screen, Pratt’s MCU run as the character was set up to continue rather than end.

What kind of Star-Lord solo movie did James Gunn describe?

Gunn said he and Pratt have long talked about doing a "Legendary Star-Lord" film, with a concept centered on Star-Lord back on Earth as a "fish out of water" trying to adapt to ordinary life. As described in the article it remains an idea the two have discussed, not an officially greenlit or dated project.

Will James Gunn write and direct the potential Star-Lord movie?

That is unconfirmed. The article notes there’s a possibility Gunn won’t write or direct it, since his focus has shifted to building DC Studios’ new cinematic universe. Any claim that he will or won’t helm a Star-Lord solo film should be treated as speculation until officially announced.
