When Sega and Nintendo first released a video game series with a hedgehog named Sonic as the lead character, they never would have imagined the unprecedented success and movie franchise that would follow. The Japanese video game developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara were solely responsible for Sega’s rapid growth after Sonic hit the gaming platform.

With two already successful Sonic movies, Paramount Pictures is looking to continue the story with a third installment, adding new villains and characters to the mix. This has gotten fans excited as they look forward to the speedy hedgehog having more adventures with his real-life best friend.

Sonic 3 welcomes new characters and voice actors

Sega’s Sonic video game series solely turned the fate of the company with humongous success and fame. Along with Sonic, the developers further made more playable characters to bring additional interesting dimensions to the show. Moreover, to give the superpowered hedgehog tough competition, the developers created Eggman, a man scientist hell-bent on destroying Sonic and his friends.

While we witnessed Jim Carrey’s insane comedic excellence as Eggman in the previous movies, the upcoming Sonic flick with introduce us to Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by none other than Keanu Reeves. With Ben Schwartz returning to voice Sonic and Idris Elba lending his voice to Knuckles the Echidna, the entire cast of Sonic 3 is star-studded.

Another new role added to the franchise with this film is that of Director Rockwell. Jessica Jones fame actress Krysten Ritter will be portraying this role as also revealed in the first-look images of her character. As Sonic and his team face the new adversary Shadow, the other live-action cast will have similar trouble on their hands as Eggman and his crew wreak fresh new havoc.

While developing more well-rounded characters for the world of Sonic, the developers aspired to add intriguing hedgehogs and other animals to diversify the mix and also give them functions other than the ones Sonic and his team shared. In this aspiration, they created Sonic Heroes in four different teams.

Team Dark features a character called Rouge the Bat who swoops in to hunt for jewels as Sonic and Eggman battle it out. The cunning bat is known for her love for chaos and extraordinary speed. Fans wanted Ritter to voice Rouge the Bat’s character in Sonic 3 as her subtle yet mean demeanor would have been perfect to add life to this fresh character.

Nevertheless, Ritter is known to take up challenging roles and ace them beyond comparison. Fans are sure the actress will do complete justice to Director Rockwell’s role as well. When the movie franchise chooses to bring Sonic Heroes into the fold, who knows, she might end up voicing Rouge and fulfilling fans’ burning desire.

Sonic 3 is set to be released on December 20, 2024.
