Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender faced several delays despite being announced 5 years ago. The film was initially announced to be released in October 2025, before being postponed to January 30, 2026. It was pushed again from its January release date to October 9, 2026.

The release plans also shifted from a theatrical film to a direct-to-streaming release on Paramount+. Delays were attributed to obstacles in physical animation production (via Animation Magazine).

The original animated series’ cast has been etched in the minds of fans, but it was predominantly a White cast. The upcoming Avatar Aang film will feature an eclectic cast, with actor Eric Nam leading as Aang. Dave Bautista will voice Tagah, a new character added to the movie, who is an ancient Airbender frozen in ice.

Jessica Matten, Román Zaragoza, and Steven Yeun play Katara, Sokka, and Fire Lord Zuko, respectively. Familiar voices will be heard in the movie, with actors like Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ke Huy Quan, and Ken Jeong lending their voices for miscellaneous characters.

The original animated series ended with the Fire Lord Ozai being defeated and the war between the nations ending. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will follow years in the future, where Aang discovers another surviving Airbender, frozen in ice. Tagah, the other Airbender, has a staff that is believed to be able to restore Aang’s culture.

Footage from the film was leaked online, which confirmed some of the plot elements of the upcoming movie (via Polygon). The film began production in 2021, and in March 2026, director Lauren Montgomery posted that they had wrapped. Its initial title was The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.

Earlier this year, in April, footage from Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender was leaked on X, with several profiles sharing clips from the movie immediately. The X user who first posted the footage claimed that Nickelodeon had accidentally emailed them the film. Many users appreciated the visuals and quality of the film (via IGN).

The leak drew sharp criticism from the film’s production staff, with animators like Julia Schoel and Tom Barkel condemning the leak and saying that it was an insult to years of hard work from the production crew (via @papajoolia on X) .

A man was arrested in Singapore in connection with the leak, with reports suggesting that he accessed a media server without authorization (via StraitsTimes). If found guilty, the accused was likely to face $50,000 in damages or a seven-year jail term, or both.

While Netflix releases the second season of its live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, more from the animated show seems to be on the horizon. After creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko exited from the live-action series over creative differences, they renewed their relationship with Nickelodeon after the success of the animated shows on Netflix.

Apart from Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, a series titled Avatar: Seven Havens is in development and has been picked for 26 episodes. The series will reportedly be split into two 13-episode seasons, for now. The plot reads (via Polygon),

Seven Havens is set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. A young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra – but in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.

There are no updates on when the show will release, but as of now there are plans to make at least 2 seasons.
