Spy x Family is undoubtedly one of the very few shows that come with a unique plot and a bunch of fascinating characters.
We have a father figure who is a spy and leads a double life as a psychiatrist, a mother who is a part-time assassin, a family dog with powers to see the future, and a daughter who can read minds. In such a scenario, where chaos can break out at any moment, we are given light-hearted scenarios without making things too serious in the series.

However, Anya Forger has a grander role to play than just being the child of her family. She’s the one who influences not only the story’s situations but also the relationships between her fake parents and her connection with Damian.
Anya and her powers keep the family together

There have been far too many instances within the series where the current Forger family could not have gotten together had Anya not stepped in and tweaked the circumstances thanks to her abilities. Because she knows what others are thinking, it gives her added leverage to manipulate a situation in her favor.
One of the first and obvious instances of this is how Anya was adopted by Loid, even though she was younger than the age range he was initially looking for. She also practically orchestrated the whole situation where Loid would end up with Yor through her comic display of being so sad because she is without a mother. Anya does that exactly after hearing Yor’s thoughts about not having a date for a party and seeing a chance to play the matchmaker there.

Despite not understanding the gravity of any situation, Anya also, in one way or another, helps her parents hide their professions and keep a natural harmony in their marriage. While the Forger family was on the cruise ship, and Yor was fighting her enemies, Anya kept Loid busy.
Anya also massively helped Yor win by finding her hook and throwing it at the top deck where Yor was. This was a game-changing move that, in a hilarious chain of events, resulted in Yor succeeding while managing to conceal her side job in front of Loid.
Anya understands Damian’s struggles

Anya’s influence is not just limited to Yor and Loid; it also helps her be closer to Damian organically. As she can read his mind, she understands the loneliness he goes through from being neglected by his own parents.
She sees beyond his fake tough exterior and notices the real Damian, who is just a young boy waiting for his father’s approval. We see Anya trying to help Damian create a Griffin in episode 17 of season 1, thinking she can mend Damian’s relationship while creating a chance for Loid to get closer to Donovan.
But every time Anya tries to help Damian out, naively hoping they can finally be friends, she fails miserably. And though she can hear his thoughts, she never realizes Damian is actually falling for her, proving that, at the end of the day, she is just a child.
Anya’s telepathic powers are mostly there for comic relief, but we cannot deny how she is the one holding together much of the plot. Had she not been involved, Operation Strix would have failed, Loid and Yor’s marriage would have ended, and Damian would not have gotten a genuine friend.
Anya is undoubtedly the one who makes Spy x Family way more watchable than any other character in the show.

Frequently asked questions
How does Anya’s telepathy drive other characters’ relationships in Spy x Family?
The article argues that Anya uses her mind-reading to steer the people around her and hold the fake Forger family together. She picks up on Yor’s worry about needing a date, which helps push the Loid-Yor pairing along, and she senses classmate Damian Desmond’s hidden loneliness. Because Loid and Yor each keep their real identities secret, Anya is often the only one who knows what everyone is truly feeling, letting her act as a quiet matchmaker and emotional bridge that keeps Operation Strix on track.
Who are Loid, Yor, and Anya Forger, and why don’t they know each other’s secrets?
Loid is the spy codenamed Twilight, who poses as a psychiatrist; Yor is a part-time assassin known as the Thorn Princess; and Anya is the young telepath the couple adopts. Each joins the family for their own hidden reason, so neither adult realizes the other is leading a double life. Anya, who can read minds, is the only one aware of all their secrets, which is why she becomes so central to the household’s dynamic.
Who created Spy x Family and which studios make the anime?
Spy x Family is a manga written and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo, serialized on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ platform. As the article notes, the anime adaptation is co-produced by Wit Studio and CloverWorks. Specific episode numbering and arc placement can differ between the manga and anime, so treat any single episode reference as approximate rather than definitive.
