Netflix announced the production of The Ribbon Hero in April 2026, and on May 26, a new visual, along with a trailer and release date in August, was released for this feature film that is going to be a modern reimagination of the Princess Knight manga written by none other than Osamu Tezuka.

What Is The Ribbon Hero About?
The Ribbon Hero is a direct adaptation of Princess Knight. This isn’t just any other old story, as it is one of the founding works of the shojo manga genre itself. The story follows Sapphire, who is a princess of a fallen kingdom called Silverland. The twist is, however, that she was raised as a prince.
This particular movie adapts the events when a disaster destroyed her homeland. Sapphire ends up in a new place called Goldland, and just as she starts to settle in and find a bit of peace, that same disaster shows up again, threatening to take everything away a second time. So she picks up her sword and decides to protect everyone as the Ribbon Hero.
When Will The Ribbon Hero Be Released?
The good news is that the release of this movie is not far away. The Ribbon Hero premieres globally on Netflix on August 8, 2026. Netflix hasn’t confirmed an exact hour, but the platform usually drops new titles at 12:00 AM Pacific Time, or 3:00 AM Eastern Time. This movie has a stacked crew, so we can expect it to be one of the best anime releases this year. Yuuki Igarashi is directing, and this is going to be his first feature-length movie. He previously worked on Star Wars: Visions and did key animation for the Jujutsu Kaisen ending. Twin Engine, the production behind it, also made Vinland Saga and Dororo (which is another story written by Tezuka).
Character designs come from Kei Mochizuki, whose past design work includes the Fate/Grand Order franchise, with Mai Yoneyama, known for her design contributions to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and LAZARUS, assisting on the concept.
The score is handled by MONACA composers Satoru Kousaki and Ryuichi Takada. Kousaki in particular is a heavyweight in the anime music world, having composed for K-On!, Lucky Star, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
The voice cast is stacked with recognizable names as well. Saya, from the comedy duo Lalande, takes her first lead role in an animated feature as Sapphire. Koki Uchiyama, who plays Velvet, is one of the most in-demand voice actors right now, known for Shigaraki Tomura in My Hero Academia, Tsukishima Kei in Haikyuu!!, and Inumaki Toge in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Is There a Trailer for The Ribbon Hero?
Yes, the first teaser dropped in May 2026, showing off the mix of big action and emotional moments the movie is going for. Sapphire still has that cheerful, heroic energy from the original manga, but this time, with amazing animations that perfectly show her emotions visually. There’s also a transformation sequence that looks straight out of a magical girl anime, something that wasn’t around when the manga first came out.
In the trailer, we can also hear the voice of Saya, and it appears to be perfect for this role. Sapphire is a kind girl with the heart of a knight, but she also has the demeanour of a princess, and Saya’s voice acting nailed all of those aspects. Studio Outline’s animations appear spectacular, and we can expect some amazing action sequences that weren’t possible when the story first came out.
Director Igarashi’s Statement About the Project
Director Yuuki Igarashi shared a statement about how he approached the movie. He said he poured in his respect for Osamu Tezuka, creator of Princess Knight, and for Ichizo Kobayashi of the Takarazuka Revue, since that’s where the story’s roots come from. He said (via Netflix):
“For this film, I poured in my respect for Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Princess Knight; for Ichizo Kobayashi of the Takarazuka Revue, which lies at the root of the work; and for the supreme, classic entertainment they brought into the world.”
Igarashi noted that both creators made their most famous work while dealing with real-world struggles, like war and disease. He hopes today’s audiences connect with the movie the same way, calling it a “blood-stirring, heart-pounding piece” of true mainstream entertainment.
Osamu Tezuka: The Legendary Author Behind The Ribbon Hero
Osamu Tezuka is basically the reason a lot of your favorite shows exist. He’s often called the “God of Manga,” and his work laid the foundation for the modern anime industry. Before Tezuka, manga were mostly short comic strips. He’s the one who brought cinematic panel layouts and real storytelling to the page.
His most famous work is Astro Boy, a 1952 sci-fi manga that kicked off the whole robot genre. He also created Black Jack, about an unlicensed but brilliant surgeon, and Kimba the White Lion. His biggest project was Phoenix, a massive, unfinished saga about reincarnation across different eras.
