Sir Patrick Stewart has had a career as an actor spanning over seven decades. Working this long calls for experimenting and changing things a bit to keep the enthusiasm for the job alive. The Star Trek actor wanted to try out something new when he starred in Jeremy Saulnier’s 2015 horror thriller Green Room.

The movie follows a punk band being attacked by a neo-Nazi group after they witness a murder. The film is very graphic with the deaths that happen. It served its purpose of unsettling the audiences and the actors partaking in the project were not an exception either. In one particular scene, Sir Stewart refused to leave his trailer to watch the whole thing play out.

Fear is an amusing thing. When presented with the suspension of disbelief movies offer and the assurance of it being in the film, fear is enjoyable. That’s why horror is a genre. The intricacies of horror fascinate people more than they scare them. When freight overwhelms curiosity, that’s how you know that the film in front of you is peak horror.

Green Room is filled with terrifying and gut-wrenching scenes. A film with all the elements of horror: innocent people in the wrong place at the wrong time, dystopian factors of society at play, bloodshed, violence, etc.

The scenes with heavy violence not only disturb the viewers but also the actors on set. Stewart decided to play this role as a step to venture into new territories as an actor. He was drawn to the script. But he too, found many scenes extremely unsettling. He made it a point to not see any scenes he wasn’t in.

One scene in the movie is particularly more unsettling than the others. Hence, naturally inspires some intrigue. It doesn’t have Stewart in it, but he was invited on set as a spectator by someone from the crew. An offer, the SAG-Award winner declined. He told IndieWire how he was keen on avoiding the gory scenes:

“I avoided those moments. Somebody came to my trailer at one point and said, ‘They’re doing the scene with the dog ripping out the girl’s throat’. I said, ‘You know what? I’ll just stay in here reading my newspaper.’ I love pit bulls so much I didn’t want to see one of them being characterized in that way.”

The actor later goes on to say that the dog was a very friendly one. And even though he didn’t watch him in his act, he did go to meet his furry friend. He said:

“So I went over and the dog came along. I put my arms around him and gave him a great big hug. You wouldn’t believe it was the same dog you see in the movie.”

No one can blame Stewart for attempting to keep his sanity intact when starring in such a film.
