According To Matt Reeves, Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne Was Inspired By Kurt Cobain
When the first trailer for Batman was released in August 2020, it was accompanied by an unexpected piece of soundtrack; let’s find out what it was:
When the first trailer for Batman was released in August 2020, it included an unusual piece of soundtrack — an orchestral, trailer-music-ified rendition of Nirvana’s “Something In The Way.” Sometimes such music selections are just a matter of finding the perfect mood or a special connection with the lyrics — but in the case of Matt Reeves’ fresh take on DC’s Caped Crusader, there was a far more specific reason. It’s a song that gets directly to the core of the filmmaker’s concept for the character—one that shaped Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne, the affluent orphan who dons the cowl and shakes down Gotham’s criminal underbelly.
Matt Reeves’s interview with Empire for the upcoming The Batman issue:
“I listen to music while I write, and when I was writing the first act, I turned on Nirvana’s “Something In The Way,” Reeves tells Empire in the forthcoming edition of The Batman. It’s a song inspired by a ’90s grunge star, and it offers a completely different perspective on current big-screen Bats, from Christian Bale to Ben Affleck. That’s when it occurred to me that, rather than making Bruce Wayne the playboy we’ve seen previously, there’s another version who has suffered a huge sorrow and has become a hermit. So I started thinking of Gus Van Sant’s Last Days and the concept of a fictionalized Kurt Cobain living in this type of crumbling house. ”
How Did Robert Pattinson Become the Perfect Actor for the New Batman Film?
Who is the best actor for the job? Pattinson, whose remarkable performance in the Safdie Brothers’ Good Time piqued Reeves’ interest, piqued Reeves’. “You could really sense his weakness and despair in that movie, but you could also feel his power,” the filmmaker explains. I felt it was a terrific combination. He also has that Kurt Cobain appearance, where he appears to be a rock star yet has the air of a loner. ” It’s not only a different view of Bruce Wayne; it’s also a different Batman, with fewer of the showy tools given by Lucius Fox (who doesn’t appear here) in the Nolan trilogy and a more home-spun, self-constructed edge. “Bruce has been hiding,” Pattinson adds. “He’s not much of a socialite. He’s making all of these small contraptions and stuff with Alfred’s help. Even Alfred believes he’s gone nuts! ”
The Difference Between Pattinson’s Batsuit & Other Batsuits There have been:
It’s noticeable in the Batsuit, which appears to have been put through the wringer. “He’s been out every night for two years, getting beaten up, shot, stabbed, and burned, and it shows,” says the actor. Right from the start, there’s a gunshot graze on the cowl. That hasn’t been done before, as far as I know. ” Pick up Empire’s world-exclusive The Batman magazine to learn more about director Matt Reeves, starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Colin Farrell, and Paul Dano, and producer Dylan Clark’s bold reinterpretation of the Caped Crusader.
