Francis Ford Coppola is one of the legendary directors in the industry with whom every actor wishes to work. So, it is no surprise that when he came knocking on Driver’s door, the latter knew better than to turn him away.
One of the leading figures of the New Hollywood film movement, Coppola is the mastermind behind projects like The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Conversation, Lost in Translation, and many more. Recipient of five Academy Awards, Coppola disrupted Driver’s plan of taking a break from acting.
The 40-year-old actor himself confessed to Discussing Film that it was Coppola’s Megalopolis that made him keep his personal plans aside for a moment.
Francis himself, he’s one of those directors that almost every actor I know when you get that opportunity it’s going to be interesting.

Directors usually take their own time to develop a movie before releasing it to the masses. Surprisingly, Coppola took almost 47 years to develop the film from scratch. The movie revolves around Cesar Catilina as he clashes with Franklyn Cicero to ensure the rebuilding of the metropolis of New Rome after a devastating disaster. What’s interesting to note about the movie is the fact that Coppola began developing it back in 1977, almost 47 years before its scheduled release.
It was in 1983 when Coppola started assembling notes for the script as the initial preparation. The shooting was planned to begin in 1989 but got postponed as Coppola himself focused on other projects over this film. The film got abandoned once again before getting a concrete green signal in 2019.
Megalopolis is set to hit theatres on September 27, 2024.
