SUMMARY
  • Adriana Lima became a Victoria's Secret Angel in 2000 and held the title for over two decades before her recent return.
  • Even a fitness writer found Lima's diet and workout plan tough to follow despite being fit herself.
  • The Brazilian model told Harper's Bazaar that she has to stay fit throughout the year, but trains harder before a show.

Adriana Lima, best known for her work with Victoria’s Secret, did not aspire to become a model even though she had won numerous beauty pageants at a young age. She entered a modeling contest along with a friend at her insistence and the rest, as they say, is history.

Lima has tirelessly worked to make said history. She made her runway debut in 1997 and has since walked the runways for many popular fashion brands including Versace, Miu Miu, Prada, and Louis Vuitton. In 1999, at the age of 17, she walked the Victoria’s Secret runway for the first time.

The next year, she signed the contract as an Angel and continued to be one for almost two decades. As rewarding as being an Angel is, it also requires a lot of dedication and hard work for the kind of fitness that these models have.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is an annually held lingerie fashion show which was started in 1995. Four years later, the show was streamed online for the first time. Soon, it grew into a highly anticipated spectacle, featuring elaborate costumes, live performances from popular artists, and star-studded audiences.

The concept of Victoria’s Secret Angels originated in 1997 when the brand’s marketing of its ‘Angels’ underwear collection turned out to be a huge success. The official Angels do not just walk the runway for the brand. They also act as the spokesmodels and appear in marketing campaigns and talk shows.

The company has 3 dozen official Angels and Adriana Lima was one of them until 2018. In fact, she was the longest-running Angel and is returning once again according to a recent announcement (via Instagram). Being a model is a tough job as it is, but being a Victoria’s Secret Angel is even tougher, based on the diet and workout plan.

Amy Schlinger, a health and fitness writer, tried Lima’s diet and workout plan for a week. She maintained a log for every single day of the week which she published on Glamour. She met Lima herself and stated that the preshow plan included egg-white omelets, oatmeal, protein shakes with fruit, fish, veggies, chia, nuts, Japanese yams and sweet potatoes, and fruit. It also included drinking at least 2 liters of water every day.

As far as her daily workout plan is concerned, it includes boxing, jumping rope, running for daily cardio, and a few days of lifting. Schlinger wrote that sometimes Lima would hit the gym twice a day ahead of a show, and maintain her routine even when she is on the go. The fitness writer noted that despite being in good shape, she found the Brazilian model’s plan quite difficult to keep up with.

Adriana Lima was named the most valuable face of Victoria’s Secret in 2017, and even more shocking is the fact that she opened her fifth show for the brand in 2012 less than two months after giving birth to her second daughter.

During an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Lima was asked how much in advance she begins to prepare for a show. She replied:

As a model I need to be ready all year long so I train consistently. For about two months leading up to VS every year, I train even harder and eat a little bit leaner. I also try not to eat too many sweets, but it’s really hard because they are my favorite thing.

She also claimed that she had to work harder than before to keep her body in shape after becoming a mother. As far as her diet was concerned, she said she had smoothies, fresh fruits, vegetables, a daily vitamin, and different herbal teas.
