The Oscar-winning actress, Angelina Jolie is well-known for her role as a humanitarian. For almost two decades she was affiliated with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She has been a special envoy for the UNHCR since 2012 and was a goodwill ambassador before that since 2001. After her two-decade-long affiliation with the UN, the Salt actress decided that its time to finally move on. In a joint statement released by UNHCR and Angelina Jolie, the actress announced that she will be stepping down from the role.

On Saturday, the Angelina Jolie actress took to Instagram to announce her departure from the UNHCR. She wrote, “After over 20 years, I am stepping down today from my work with the UN Refugee Agency.” She further added, “Refugees are the people I admire most in the world and I am dedicated to working with them for the rest of my life.”
The actress also opened up about her future plans and that she will be working with organizations that are led by directly affected people by conflicts. She said being directly affected by conflicts “gives the greatest voice to them.” In the joint statement with UNHCR, Jolie wrote, “I will continue to do everything in my power in the years to come to support refugees and other displaced people.”

Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees praised Jolie for her hard work and dedication. He wrote in the joint statement, “I appreciate her desire to shift her engagement and support her decision.” The joint statement further appreciated her service by highlighting her recent field trips to Yemen and Burkina Faso. The statement appreciated her for her work there which is considered the “most underfunded and under-reported emergencies in the world.”

In recent months, the American actress also met up with met displaced people in war-torn Ukraine.
