After Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds Confirms Next Project With Hugh Jackman and It’s Bad News for Marvel Fans
Marvel fans are ready for a rollercoaster of emotions as the long-awaited Deadpool & Wolverine finally hits theaters soon. It will be the first time Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will properly team up on the big screen, as Reynolds famously doesn’t want to remember their previous collaboration.
The two have been close friends since their X-Men: Origins days, and it looks like their on-screen partnership isn’t ending with Deadpool & Wolverine, according to some recent revelations by Reynolds.
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Next Project Together
The off-screen friendship of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is quite famous in Hollywood and among fans as well. It all started back in 2008 on the set of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Even though the movie received a cold welcome from the public, it sparked a bromance that’s still going strong today.
There has been friendly teasing, fake fights, and a genuine appreciation for each other’s talents. Reynolds has often cracked a joke about attempting to get Jackman to come back as the Wolverine, while Jackman has pretended to be annoyed by Reynolds’ persistent requests.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reynolds hinted at teaming up with Jackman once again. It seems like the best buds have another project in the works. Reynolds said,
We have one we’re looking to do soon. I would say that [ours] is like any relationship that is successful and works: It’s that two parties are rooting for each other.
Reynolds even went so far as to say in an interview with People that he roots for Jackman, quite similar to the way he roots for his wife Blake Lively. However, his revelation has fans buzzing with excitement, but it might not be another superhero film. Reynolds hinted that their next collaboration could be outside the world of superheroes, which might disappoint some Marvel fans.
Deadpool 3 Almost Didn’t Become Deadpool & Wolverine
The making of Deadpool & Wolverine wasn’t always smooth. The project was nearly shelved before Hugh Jackman made a game-changing phone call to Ryan Reynolds.
Director Shawn Levy revealed that they were struggling to find the right story for Deadpool 3. In an interview with Vanity Fair, he revealed that he and Reynolds almost said no to the film at the moment because they were not coming up with a story.
But fate had other plans. Just as they were about to give up, Hugh Jackman called Reynolds with the idea of Deadpool and Wolverine together. Reynolds immediately acknowledged his idea and pitched it to Kevin Feige in a meeting. In the Vanity Fair interview, Reynolds revealed,
On the Zoom with Kevin, we just cut right to the f*cking chase. We said, ‘Look, this call just came in. I feel like we’d be idiots to look this gift horse in the mouth and ignore it. This is a one-in-a-billion chance. I really feel like this is what we’ve been looking for’.
This unexpected turn of events breathed new life into the project. Jackman explained in the interview that he saw Deadpool as an opportunity to explore a different side of Wolverine.
The trio of Reynolds, Jackman, and Levy quickly became what Jackman called “the Three Amigos.” Their friendship and creative collaboration have apparently made the shooting process a joy.
While they are hiding the plot details, Reynolds did tease that the film will explore the contrasting dynamics between Deadpool’s silliness and Wolverine’s seriousness.
Deadpool & Wolverine is releasing in theaters on July 26, 2024.
