- The feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar came to an end in 2024, but the consequences are still there.
- Drake has filed a defamation lawsuit against UMG in which he has named some content creators.
- The lawsuit claims that Drake's safety was compromised due the artwork used for Not Like Us cover.
Last year, the hip-hop world was on fire when Kendrick Lamar and Drake reignited their decade-old feud and hit back at each other with diss tracks. The feud received wide media coverage and fans of the rappers seemed to be having the time of their lives as both kept churning out music on a whim.
The feud finally came to a head when Kendrick Lamar released the song Not Like Us which made some serious allegations against Drake and his entourage. The latter singer fired back with a track of his own, but it failed to garner much attention. Recently, the Find Your Love singer filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group for defamation and the suit names several content creators.
Content creators named in Drake’s lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG)
When Kendrick Lamar released Not Like Us last year, the rap world seemed to be on fire as the rapper accused Drake and the other members of his team of being “certified p*dophiles” who should “be registered and placed on neighborhood watch”. This obviously was not too shocking because Drake’s friendship with Millie Bobby Brown has often been frowned upon.
Drake responded with a track called The Heart Part 6 in which he claimed that he was not a pedophile. He sang: “I never been with no one under age.” In the song, he also claimed to have fed “false” information to Lamar through a double agent. However, it did not garner the same attention as Not Like Us, which debuted atop the US chart and was streamed a billion times on Spotify.
Last November, Drake filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group. The suit was sent to a New York Court but was withdrawn later. This led many to assume that he might not have had enough evidence to prove his allegations. However, he has recently sent a revised lawsuit in which he has accused UMG of defamation and spreading the “false and malicious narrative” that he’s a pedophile (via Court House News).
In the lawsuit, he also alleged that UMG did not enforce copyright claims which let famous content creators like Kai Cenat, Zias, NoLifeShaq, RDC Gaming, and CartierFamily make money out of their reactions to Not Like Us. Allegedly, this led to both UMG and the creators earning money at the expense of Drake’s safety and well-being.
How was Drake’s safety compromised by the acclaim that Kendrick Lamar’s Not Like Us received?
Singing about people without naming them is one thing, but making serious allegations while directly addressing someone for the public to see is an entirely different matter. Neither Drake nor Kendrick Lamar seemed to draw the line at bringing up kids and other family members in their very public feud.
Things got out of hand really fast once they decided to get personal, Lamar’s accusations about Drake’s character were immortalized in a song that the world could listen to at any given moment. To make matters worse, the artwork for the song’s cover was inspired by the Started from the Bottom rapper’s home, The Embassy.
The court documents have connected the artwork to the shootings that happened shortly after the release of the song at The Embassy. The incident was called “the 2024 equivalent of ‘Pizzagate'”. According to this BBC report, ‘Pizzagate’ references a conspiracy theory about a US child s*x ring operating out of a Washington pizza restaurant, which led to a gunman opening fire on the eaterie in 2016. So, the court documents allege that Drake being labeled a p*dophile may have inspired the shooting.
