Jennifer Coolidge acknowledged the writers’ strike
The American actress Jennifer Coolidge recently received a Comedic Genius award at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. During her acceptance speech in a pre-recorded video, Coolidge showed her gratification for the honor she received, and she also praised former recipients. She said,
“Thank you, MTV. Thank you for honoring me with this incredible Comedic Genius Award. It’s even more special because I was in The Groundlings with Melissa McCarthy and Will Ferrell, and now I get to be in the club with them, and Sacha Baron Cohen, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black … what a fun night!”
While giving her acceptance speech, The White Lotus actress also acknowledged the ongoing Writers Guild of America union strike. Coolidge said,
“Almost all great comedy starts with great writers, and I just think that as a proud member of SAG, I stand here before you tonight, side by side with my sisters and brothers from the WGA. They’re fighting right now, fighting for the rights of writers everywhere.”
Being inspired by Shakespeare’s words, the Legally Blonde star expressed,
“I think, in the words of Shakespeare, he once said, ‘The play is the thing. I don’t want to put words in his mouth or anything, but I think what he really meant is, “It’s everything!”
Following the writers’ strike, many late-night shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, This Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Daily Show, and Real Time with Bill Maher are being telecasted on repeat as the live shows are on hiatus. However, some renowned shows like House of the Dragon and The View are continuing their production process despite the strike.
Why are writers on strike?
The Writers Guild of America union strike is currently making headlines as many shows are being put on hold following the strike. Many television and movie writers are protesting currently, and as a consequence, the production of shows is affected.
Every three years, certain negotiations are made between the TV and movie writers and major Hollywood studios, and currently 11,500 writers are on strike.
Television production has seen a meteoric rise throughout the last decade. Following this, media companies have also willingly invested an enormous amount in streaming services. However, the writers have shown their grievance, as they are not being deprived of their deserving share. The WGA leaders have claimed that “the survival of writing as a profession is at stake in this negotiation.”
It is the first strike in Hollywood since 2007.
