“Am I canceled? Is this it for me?”: ‘Mean Girls’ Actor Panics After Not Recognizing Lady Gaga and Beyonce Despite Starring in a Musical
Reboots and remakes are becoming increasingly common as filmmakers reprise scripts in a more modern and relevant setting. Mean Girls is the latest blockbuster flick to get a remake with a younger cast and a storyline that reflects the latest turn of events in the lives of young adults. The 2004 flick grossed $129 million worldwide as many teens and young adults connected to the theme of having queen bees in high school and suffering through bullying. Even today, younger generations find the movie incredibly relatable.
Promotion Rounds of Mean Girls
To promote their upcoming movie Mean Girls, the young star cast is on their way to various talk shows and social media channels. The movie hit the theatres in January 2024, creating major buzz. Ideated by Tina Fey, the original and the remake both work well because of their relevance in today’s age of bullying and burgeoning social media presence.
In a recent promotional appearance on Buzzfeed UK, the cast of the Mean Girls remake talked about memes and their experience in similar situations that got everyone laughing. One particular instance that caught everyone’s attention is Christopher Briney not recognising Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Many fans pointed out how he should have known them since he starred in a musical. However, Renee Rapp reassured Briney and told him that it was okay because he was young.
The prevalent cancel culture got Briney worried since he was unable to identify such massively popular icons. This goes on to show how the masses are quick to reject and dismiss celebrities based on one tiny action and it can affect the entire careers of young artists. Briney is well known for his role as Conrad in The Summer I Turned Pretty whereas Rapp played Regina George in the Broadway musical of the same story and is reprising her role in the remake.
What Is Mean Girls About?
Similar to the 2004 movie by Tina Fey, the 2024 Mean Girls showcases Cady Heron’s experience in a new school where she meets bullies Regina George and her gang that supposedly reign supreme in the school circle. The storyline is pretty much the same despite the remake being a musical movie.
The point of contention between Regina and Cady occurs when the latter falls for the former’s ex-boyfriend. Things escalate and a tug-of-power-war takes place between the two lead characters. The movie follows their efforts to defeat one another and maintain dominance over the other.
Mean Girls is directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. The remake also stars Angourie Rice and Auliʻi Cravalho. The original movie was based on a book titled Queen Bees and Wannabes. Mean Girls is produced by Paramount Pictures with a budget of $36 million.
