Based on Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil, and Jean-Marc Natel’s stage production – that was in turn based on Victor Hugo’s novel, Les Misérables was a smash hit musical movie that garnered amazing views from viewers and critics alike. Also starring in the movie were Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman. The movie went on to collect a whopping $442 million at the box office showing its immense success and admiration.

The ensemble cast received notable award nominations and critical praise for their respective roles. Among the long list of actors, Amanda Seyfried was revealed to be less enthused about her contribution to the movie. In an interview with Variety, she expressed,

“In my career, I have had a lot of moments where I just felt complete regret, I wish I could redo Les Misérables completely because of the live singing aspect, I still have nightmares about it. Singing is more indulgent than acting in some ways. I feel like when I have emotional scenes, where I get to really cry and feel what I’m actually feeling and be present in that, it feels really good and cathartic because crying is really cathartic.”

Seyfried does not view herself as a successful singer, hence was disappointed with her musical prowess in the movie. The singing was central to the plot since it was quintessentially a musical. Nonetheless, she claims that she has come a long way and would love to reprise her role now and add a new touch to the experience.

“I feel like I could definitely play Cosette now. I’ve been working diligently ever since Les Misérables to strengthen my voice and to have some stamina. Plus working on my vibrato, which was completely lost. From a very technical standpoint, I was very unhappy with my singing.”

Despite being unsatisfied with her performance, Seyfried revealed that the set was a very supportive and encouraging atmosphere. Every co-star was cordial and extremely helpful in all aspects. Talking about Hugh Jackman with Vanity Fair, she claimed,

“I just remember him being so warm, and him knowing that I was struggling and just feeling like he was there for me. I just felt totally seen by him.”

It is believed that this support made Seyfried give a wonderful performance as Cosette despite her singing expertise. Her character was nonetheless widely appreciated and commended.
