Created by Mark L. Smith and directed by Peter Berg, American Primeval is a Western miniseries starring Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin. The miniseries is set in 1857 during the Utah War and follows the fight to gain control of the American West and the violent clash between the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the culture of Utah.
Peter Berg mentioned that he was inspired to create the six-part series after reading about the Utah Wars and the Mountain Meadows Massacre. American Primeval incorporates real events along with stories of actual people who lived during the same time. Upon release, the miniseries received mixed to average reviews, but there is one thing that has left the fans confused: Who is Sara Rowell’s husband?
Sara Rowell’s act of killing a man has left American Primeval fans confused
Actress Betty Gilpin portrays the character of Sara Rowell, who is a wanted fugitive for the murder and robbery. In talking to Decider, the actress shared,
I think for Sara, her arc is sort of you know, kind of finding her inner ‘American Primeval.’. I think that when we meet her, she’s pretty buttoned up and prim and proper and terrified in this environment. But we know she has this secret.
The secret is that she has already killed a man. Sara Rowell, who was traveling with her son to Crook Springs, changed her mind and took the route to California for a better life. This has left the fans confused and probably given them a chance to churn their minds and come up with their theories about who is the man that Sara Rowell killed. A Reddit user shared,
Sara is wanted for the murder of a man and is trying to get to Crook Springs so that Devin can be with his father. But by the end of the show, she completely abandons this idea for a chance of a life in California. What I don’t understand is who is the man she killed. Also, why is Devin’s father halfway across the country from where she fled? Was that part even real?
Another user explained that it was indeed real because Rowell told her son that she wanted him to be with his father because she believed that he would protect him.
Another user had a theory stating that Sara Rowell knew that she would get arrested/killed by bounty hunters, but in order to protect her son, she started her journey to Crook Springs but eventually realized that she was a badass and could protect her son, so decided to not settle for a blah life.
The users also pointed out that there is a great chance that Devin was born out of wedlock and the man simply left when he was a baby. Rowell calls him ‘husband’ because that makes it acceptable as a story for viewers to know that this is why they were traveling.
A third user also touched upon the man she killed by stating that the man Sara Rowell killed was the one she was married to, but he was abusive and tried to strangle her and her son. They added that maybe to protect herself and her son, she killed him, took the money, and left.
American Primeval director says Sara Rowell is a survivor
In a conversation with Netflix’s TUDUM, the director Peter Berg was asked if Sara Rowell will reunite with Devin’s father in Crook Springs. To which he explained that Sara Rowell is really a survivor, and she is good at it. He added that her survival skills get tested in ways that a big city wouldn’t test.
The director mentioned that in the old life, Rowell was someone who needed her beauty and intellect to find security with Devin’s father, who provided her with security and a lifestyle.
But added that he was an **hole. When she took her son to the East, a new man in Philadelphia tried to ease her woes but in return turned out to be dangerous, especially to her kid, which is why she killed him. Berg says,
And that’s where Isaac comes in. She’s not able to manipulate coerce or have her way with Isaac the way she might’ve with others in the past. Those were the kinds of things Betty [Gilpin] and I talked about.
The actress shares with the publication that Isaac’s arrival is almost like he’s a physical embodiment of something that Sara has felt inside for her whole life. The director chimed in to add that Sara Rowell always knew that she was a strong individual, but now she’s got an added ability to her strength.
