This appearance comes after Ifans was last seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Eddie Brock/Venom was also featured in a post-credits scene. Speculation is already rife among fans about whether Ifans might also reprise his role as Dr. Curt Connors, a.k.a. The Lizard, in the upcoming Venom film.

You might remember Rhys Ifans as the antagonist Dr. Connors, who turned into a giant lizard in Andrew Garfield‘s 2012 movie The Amazing Spider-Man. He also returned to his role as The Lizard (providing the voice for the character) in the movie Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.

Venom, one of Spider-Man’s most iconic foes (later becoming an anti-hero), comes from the Spider-Man comics. The character is intrinsically linked to Spider-Man through the symbiote storyline. Sony Pictures created its own movie universe based on Spider-Man characters, with Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) being the first films.

Importantly, these Venom movies are separate from the popular MCU and focus on Venom as a standalone character without direct ties to Spider-Man. Thus, the Venom movies aren’t directly connected to The Amazing Spider-Man movies. However, in another Spider-Man film, Tom Hardy‘s character Venom makes a brief appearance in the end credits scene.

He is shown in the same universe as Spider-Man for a short time before returning to his own universe — around the same time, The Lizard also goes back to his universe. In the new Venom movie, Ifans’ character is just listed as a ‘Hippie.’ This raises the question: Is Ifans playing the same villain again, or someone totally new?

Venom is returning to the big screen for a final showdown! The upcoming movie, Venom: The Last Dance, will be the third and last film in the series, starring Tom Hardy as both Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote Venom.

Kelly Marcel, who wrote the screenplays for the previous Venom movies, is taking the director’s chair this time around. The story, which she co-created with Hardy, follows Eddie and Venom on the run from enemies in both their own world and another. With danger closing in, they’ll be forced to make a tough choice that will end their story.

Venom: The Last Dance is part of a bigger Sony universe of movies based on Spider-Man characters. Several other films are in the works, and there are even TV shows planned. But for now, the focus is on Venom 3.

Venom: The Last Dance is set to release on October 25th!
