The highly anticipated romantic comedy We Live In Time, starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, will follow the story of a couple meeting in the most awkward way possible. Their meet-cute leads to their love story, which starts with them dating, building a family, and confronting cancer through snapshots of their existence—all presented out of order.
We Live in Time premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024. Ahead of its release, Andrew Garfield admitted that an unexpected cast member helped the movie garner more attention than the lead couple could.
Andrew Garfield is caught up with We Live in Time’s ‘horse memes’
Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming romantic-comedy movie We Live in Time opposite Florence Pugh, appeared at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival for the world premiere of the movie. On the red carpet, the actor spoke to Etalk, where he admitted that he is yet to hear from an unexpected cast member who has garnered the most attention. He said,
I haven’t heard from him since our shoot day, but I pray he makes an appearance because, without him, we are nothing.
Garfield is talking about the bright yellow plastic horse, which was in the frame of one of the first images teased from We Live in Time in mid-August. Fans praised the chemistry between Garfield and Pugh, but the chatter quickly turned to the horse’s face, which looked as if it was braying enthusiastically (at least pretending to hide the pain). The horse’s face went viral in no time, and the actor joked on the red carpet,
No one would know this film if it wasn’t for that f***king horse.
Fans were just thrilled to know that the actor is aware of the meme that his movie has contributed to. During a post-screening Q&A, the actor, who lost his mother in 2019 to pancreatic cancer, was asked about how he prepared himself to play a character with a loved one suffering from cancer. Garfield answered (via Variety),
It was one of those scripts where so much was taken care of already. The writing was so precise. I don’t know if you know Nick Payne’s work. He wrote an amazing play called Constellations, making sure I got that right… And the way he writes about relationships is just so exquisite and so singular as a playwright and as a screenwriter.
The actor continued that he had a solid foundation, which helped with adding that in terms of preparations, actors don’t want to know what the next take is going to look like. And that only happens if they have a scene partner who they can pay attention to, tune into, and listen to, and for him, that was Florence Pugh.
Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh talk about We Live in Time
The actors who are already being praised for their chemistry in the movie were asked about filming together, to which Florence Pugh answered (via Variety),
We rehearsed. We had, I think, two weeks of really special, beautiful time, which is always such a wonderful thing when you get rehearsal time for any movie, where we would just talk through scenes, talk through how we felt.
The actress also shared with AFP (via Inside Nova) that working with Garfield and the rest of the crew was such a magical experience. She added that they have been trying to talk about what chemistry is and where it came from, but the truth is that they just know that they were willing to jump together, and that is why maybe what the audience saw feels mad and raw.
Garfield was asked about his experience of filming moments of anger, sadness, and thrill of having a child in the movie, to which he noted that he’s just happy that he got to do those, especially with Pugh by his side. Marvel actor noted that he thinks his filming those scenes was meant to be done with Pugh.
The filmmaker also addressed their 13-year-age gap and stated that the actress is an old soul, adding that she carries more heft on her in a way where Garfield carries a kind of boyishness. He concluded that it worked in the best way, and the audience would get to see their magic soon on-screen.
We Live in Time is scheduled for limited release on October 11, 2024.
