Garfield lost his mother to pancreatic cancer in 2019. He was filming The Eyes of Tammy Faye at the time and the production of Tick, Tick… Boom! was about to begin. Fortunately, he was able to be by her side. He dedicated his performance in the latter to his mother.
In a recent episode of the podcast, All There Is with Anderson Cooper (via CNN), Garfield revealed how he feels close to his mother even after all these years. He said that it is the “crying out”, the desperate need to have his mother by his side, and the deafening silence that all of it is met with that makes him feel close to her.
Only in really inhabiting that absence, being that little boy at the bottom of that empty cave in vast darkness and just kind of crying out. That’s the only moment that she that she comes. It’s like it’s a necessity and it’s so weird. It’s like the longing and the grief. Fully inhabiting it and feeling it is the only way I can is the only way I can really feel close to her again.
He believes that loss and grief are what make people truly appreciate life. To put it simply, hardships make a person more alive and open to the good things life has to offer.

I tried clay molding, and I wasn’t very good. And I tried painting, and I wasn’t very good. Tried music and I was fine. And then the last thing I tried was theater. She kind of hung in there with me and was the first person to put me on that kind of path, so I’m indebted to her forever.
