Andrew Garfield’s Upcoming Luca Guadagnino Film Gives Him a Million-Dollar Opportunity He Rarely Ever Got as Spider-Man
- Andrew Garfield has been seen doing a lot of different things in his career so far.
- His new film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, will see him rage like never before.
- The Academy Award-nominated actor is being selective about what he does next.
Andrew Garfield has showcased many talents in his over two-decade-long acting career, from crying to singing. There is hardly anything that he has not excelled at, but there is always more that can be done, and he remains no exception.
In fact, Garfield’s upcoming project directed by Luca Guadagnino, has given him the opportunity to do something he has not really been seen doing before. The best part is probably that the actor is talking about anger positively after talking about grief for months.
Andrew Garfield has gotten the rare opportunity to be angry on screen
The world witnessed Andrew Garfield doing action scenes in The Amazing Spider-Man like it was second nature for him, as he swung from one part of the city to another as the titular web-slinger. In the biographical musical drama Tick, Tick… Boom!, he sang his heart out as Jonathan Larson.
The most heart-wrenching emotion Garfield has been seen portraying on screen is deep sorrow, often delivered with raw vulnerability and authenticity. The audience often finds itself emotional as tears roll down the actor’s cheeks when he cries upon losing his on-screen girlfriend Gwen Stacy or when he wails as a doomed man in Never Let Me Go.
The Social Network actor understands grief and is not afraid to let the tears flow freely, even when he is not performing. That said, he gets to explore another emotion – anger – with intense depth in Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt, showcasing yet another facet of his versatile acting range. Speaking about it to GQ‘s Ben Allen, he said:
There’s scenes of tremendous rage in it that I got to inhabit, and the release involved is profound.
Garfield, who has been talking about the grief of losing loved ones at every given chance, is now also reevaluating other commonly misinterpreted emotions – like “reclaiming anger”.
Anger is just a boundary setter. It straightens the spine. It gives you energy. I think rage has a bad rap, and rightly so. But anger, I think, even Jesus was allowed to get angry.
The Hacksaw Ridge star further said that he had an idea for a rage room and said that such places are there in Brooklyn. He even insisted that he had this idea before they came into existence. He has never been to one although he would like to. So, do not be too surprised if you end up seeing him exploring one of those.
Andrew Garfield is being selective about the projects he chooses to star in
Following his cameo appearance in the blockbuster superhero film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Garfield went on a two-year-long hiatus. Last year, he made a comeback with the romance drama, We Live in Time, which received rave reviews from critics and audiences.
Post his hiatus, he seems to have gained clarity about what he wants to do next in his career, and that includes not signing up for something that requires him to do the same role again and again.
I can keep doing the same thing, but it doesn’t feel right any more. I’m getting back to the pure joy of the work rather than having it tied to career in any way.
He denied those rumors about him returning in Spider-Man 4, although he is certain that no one would believe it after how things played out last time. This does not mean that he is going to completely abstain from appearing in big franchises. If he finds the franchise worthwhile, he will be starring in it.
