Another Avengers: Endgame Star Was Desperate to Play Black Panther Before Chadwick Boseman
Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther role has been an iconic one. The actor entered MCU as the T’Challa and instantly became a fan favorite. After his role in Black Panther, fans were eager to see him reprise his role in the second installment. However, things didn’t work out, as the actor lost his long battle with cancer in 2020 at the age of 43.
The film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which came out in 2022, paid tribute to the late actor. Boseman has been a perfect fit as Black Panther and will always be. But there was another Avengers: Endgame Star, who wanted to play the role in MCU. Anthony Mackie, better known for playing Sam Wilson (Falcon) in the franchise, was desperate to land the role of Black Panther.
Anthony Mackie wanted Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther role
Chadwick Boseman entered the MCU as Black Panther, and he graced the big screen with his exceptional acting skills. The actor’s role in MCU instantly became an iconic one. People loved his portrayal of T’Challa in the franchise. After the first standalone film, the actor was part of various Avengers films. A second film was planned with the actor, but his sudden death from cancer crushed fans’ dream to see him as Black Panther. The 2022 film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever paid tribute to the actor and his character. While fans can’t imagine any other star playing Black Panther, there was a Marvel star who was desperate for this role.
Anthony Mackie, better known for playing Sam Wilson (Falcon) in the franchise, revealed he was a huge Black Panther fan and always wanted to play the role. During an interview, Mackie shared how he actively tried to land the role and wrote letters to Marvel, hoping he would get the part.
The Falcon and Winter Soldier star said,
“I had written them letters. I was trying to find a way to make them make Black Panther. And I wanted to be Black Panther because growing up I f**king loved Black Panther.”
The 44-year-old got a call from Marvel, and he thought it was regarding playing Black Panther in the films. When Marvel booked a meeting with him, Mackie believed his calls were answered. The funny thing was, they didn’t let Mackie know he was in consideration for Sam Wilson, so the actor thought he was playing Black Panther.
The father-of-four recalled the interview saying,
“I’ll never forget, Joe Russo added, ‘Listen, so we’re doing this movie. We want you to be in it. We can’t say what character you’re playing or who else is going to be in it. Would you do it?’ And that was it, I was like, ‘You know what, I like y’all dudes. I’ll do it. I’ll go on this ride with you.”
The actor bagged the role of Captain America’s most trusted comrade. He revealed,
“What other major comic book figure has enough of a presence to have his own movie? So when they hit me up and they were like, ‘Yo, so it’s Sam Wilson’, I’m like, ‘Really?”
Mackie ended up playing Sam Wilson in the MCU, and Chadwick Boseman took the mantle of the Black Panther. Mackie will reprise his Sam Wilson in Captain America, Brave New World.

Chadwick Boseman died at the age of 43
Chadwick Boseman died on August 28, 2020. He was battling colon cancer for four years. The actor was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016 and battled it for the last four years as it progressed to stage IV. In 2020 at the age of 43, the actor lost his battle as he succumbed to death.
The actor played various iconic roles over the years. His first significant performance was in 2010 when he played Sergeant Graham McNair in NBC’s Person Unknown, which ran for one season. Boseman’s breakout performance came three years later, in the 2013 film 42 when he played Jackie Robinson, the first Black player in Major League Baseball.
The late actor got his biggest break as T’Challa, known as the Black Panther, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before starring in Black Panther, a 2018 film, Boseman made his acting debut as the Black Panther in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.
