SPOILERS AHEAD!

In the first episode of the eagerly anticipated Marvel’s Secret Invasion series, which debuted on Disney+ and starred Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, a beloved character was shockingly killed off. The plot of the show centers on how the shape-shifting Skrulls that everyone saw in Captain Marvel in 2019 have turned on Fury and have begun infiltrating all tiers of human society.

It was noted that a political thriller theme set with a twist is a breath of fresh air after the recent fantastical adventures we’ve taken to the Quantum Realm and the furthest edges of the galaxy. It was reported that the tone of the show is similar to that of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The loss of a beloved character, however, shocked the fans.

Cobie Smulders reveals the fate of Maria Hill in Marvel’s Secret Invasion

Actress Cobie Smulders, who is known to play long-time S.H.I.E.L.D. operative and Avengers-ally Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reprised her role for Marvel’s Secret Invasion starring Samuel L. Jackson but this time it was to put an end to her chapter.

Hill, Fury, and Skrull Talos teamed up to stop Gravik played by Kingsley Ben-Adir from carrying out an attack, but unfortunately, it was her who was put to an end as she approached a man who she believed was Fury, who shockingly shot her and leaves her to bleed to death. The man was Gravik masquerading as Fury instead.

During a recent conversation with Variety, the actress was asked if Hill was dead to which she said, “It feels like the end? But it’s such a vast, complicated, multiverse world that Marvel is living in. So I suppose anything is possible. This is all above my level of access, so I don’t know. Her death propelled the story in a much more vulnerable direction for the rest of the characters in the show. It certainly is increasing the stakes and setting up Fury to be in a very emotional state. That’s hopefully been accomplished.”

The actress further said that it has been such a wonderful ride and she is just so glad that nothing got spoiled, adding that she couldn’t believe it because even when she is talking about it, she feels like she is doing something wrong.

Cobie Smulders on the unfinished story of Maria Hill in the Marvel Universe

Smulders during the interview was asked if she ever wondered about the backstory of the character she had been playing since 2012 to which the actress said that it’s true that Hill’s backstory has not been explored on camera but it has been alive for her.

She continued, “I was very excited to sort of have these moments in Secret Invasion between the characters of Nick Fury and Maria Hill, where we do get to see the level of their relationship, how deep that connection goes. To be able to be the one to say, “You can’t do this job” to Nick Fury is, one, terrifying, and two, is because of this level of intimacy that these characters have. So it was really exciting to be in a more playful space emotionally, as opposed to focusing on the action.”

The actress in the conversation revealed that what comes to her mind is the movie the second one; The Avengers. She added, “Playing this role has taken me to different places in the world and just allowed me to meet and work with some of the most talented creative people out there. Also, just the amazing fandom that supports all of these projects — it’s been a cool thing to bear witness to. I don’t know if I’ll ever be lucky enough to be in Hall H [at San Diego Comic-Con] again.”

Dedicated followers of Maria Hill, who are devastated by her sudden death, claim that there is probably a good reason why she was killed so young and that it sets a rather unfavorable precedent. After Scarlett Johansson and Zoe Saldana revealed that their characters are also finished in the MCU, it is disappointing to see that yet another promising character and actress has left the franchise.
