Maui officials clarify the Oprah Winfrey controversy situation
Oprah Winfrey was one of the people who stepped up and decided to visit the shelters in Maui and ask the residents about what essentials they need to keep them comfortable in such tragic and tough times and provide them with supplies. But recently it was reported that the host along with her camera crew from CBS News, had been turned away from visiting a shelter for survivors at the War Memorial Complex in Wailuku.
The Country of Maui took to its official Facebook page to share the situation,
“To clarify, Oprah was able to visit our shelter and we thank her for instructing media journalists and camera crews to remain outside. We welcome Oprah to continue to uplift our community’s spirit and give her aloha to victims of the tragic disaster.”
The statement from the officials continued, “Her visit inside of the shelter today was truly heartwarming and we appreciate her understanding of our policy of having no camera crews or reporters accompanying dignitaries and celebrities in our emergency shelters. Mahalo.”
The host asked her camera crew to wait outside, after which she was given entry to the complex and she spent some time with the survivors. The statement mentioned after she turned her camera crew away and went inside the shelter herself,
“Out of respect for those who have come to seek safety and shelter at emergency shelters, our policy remains that no media are given access. We welcome Oprah to continue to uplift our community’s spirit and give her aloha to victims of the tragic disaster and appreciate her understanding of our policy of no camera crews or reporters in our emergency shelters. Mahalo.”
