Barry Keoghan Pestered Director For 3 Years To Get Cast in a Film While Actor Was Still a Teenager
The Irish actor Barry Keoghan has managed to solidify his position in Hollywood with one brilliant performance after another. It was not just luck and star power but also sheer determination that helped Barry Keoghan land his first role in a film. According to sources, he pestered director Mark O’Connor for 3 years to be cast in a movie while he himself was just a teenager.
Director Mark O’Connor opens up about how Barry Keoghan nudged the director for years to get cast
The director, Mark O’Connor, fondly remembered how he spotted star quality in Barry Keoghan ever since he discovered him. While talking to the Irish Mail on Sunday (via. Geek Ireland), he told the outlet how he was not surprised that Keoghan finally got the chance to play his dream role of Billy The Kid, given that he always found the actor to be not only talented but also determined and enthusiastic about playing each role he gets. He further opened up by saying:
“I had a look back at my old emails and Barry was always in touch with me, always wanting to meet this person or that person. He was very driven and that really helped him.”
Mark O’Connor also shared an anecdote where he remembered how they first met. Back in 2006, he put up notices in local shops in search of local actors to be in his film Between The Canals, and Barry Keoghan responded to the ad. However, it was not a smooth journey, as the film eventually came out in 2011, five years after it was first conceptualized by O’Connor. Barry Keoghan apparently kept calling and pestering the director for three years, asking about the progress of the film before he was finally cast. He was a teenager back then.
“That was way back, about 2006. Barry was a kid and he was ringing me for three years every couple of weeks saying, ‘Here, are you doing that film?’”
Finally, when the funding was secured, O’Connor thought, “He’s so eager, he’s so keen… I just liked him. There was something about him.” It was quite a big break for Barry Keoghan, as he had only acted in school plays up until that point. However, he gave a performance that was no less than that of a seasoned professional.
