Before Escaping to Spain to Protect Daughter Oonagh, Amber Heard Deleted Her Social Media Accounts to Enjoy Her “Privacy”
As much as Amber Heard might have wanted privacy, the defamation trial unquestionably did the opposite for her. As it was one of the most highly publicized legal trials, it was inevitable for Heard or Johnny Depp for that matter. To take a break from the negative attention from the media Heard packed and left for Spain with her daughter after the end of the trial.
Moreover, she has also been inactive on social media since last year. The amount of ridicule she faced at the hands of the internet trolls was enough to make someone in her situation want to disappear.
Amber Heard Deleted Her Social Media Amid Huge Trolling
Since the beginning of the Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard defamation trial, Heard faced comparatively worse treatment from the public. Seemingly, she got ridiculed and disrespected publicly and in a way that might affect a person deeply. Regardless of the verdict, it would not be wrong to say that the actress received a bit too harsh treatment. Some years before any legal troubles came to the surface, the Aquaman star had revealed her desire for privacy. But the court trial brought the exact opposite situation for her. Suddenly her issues were all up on the Internet. Uncountable memes making fun of Heard were shared and were all over social media.
Therefore it made sense for her to disappear for a while physically and in the online world too. After the trial came to an end, she packed up and left for Spain with her daughter Oonagh Paige.
With so much negative media attention and cyberbullying everywhere, getting out of the spotlight was the only step she could take. Moreover, she also had to deal with financial issues following the trial.
In November last year, Heard deactivated her Twitter account. This happened after her ex-beau Elon Musk took over the platform. And even her Instagram has been defunct for a while.
What Was the Defamation Trial About?
It all started due to an op-ed written by Amber Heard in 2018 via The Washington Post. In it, she admitted to being a domestic violence victim but did not mention any name in particular. Not only that but UK news publication The Sun had a whole article calling Heard’s ex-husband Johnny Depp a “wife-beater”. Depp sued the publication but ended up losing the case. Next, he sued Heard for 50 million dollars in a defamation case.
The jury ruled in Depp’s favor and he was awarded 15 million dollars initially which was later reduced to 10 million. At the same time, Heard who lost the defamation trial was awarded 2 million as compensatory damages for a countersuit.
