Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam Topping on Netflix: Will James Gunn Utilize The Opportunity?

Dwayne Johnson‘s Black Adam received a release date in 2022, after being in development for a long time. Not only did the film take significant time to release, but even Johnson was busy promoting his film for two years before it came out. Since Black Adam was set to feature The Rock, and considering his promising words towards the hierarchy of the DC Universe, expectations were incredibly high with the superhero flick. The 2022 film’s post-credit scenes also included Henry Cavill‘s Superman, but since the tables have turned for the superhero world, followed by Cavill’s departure after playing Superman for years, Gunn can take this opportunity to create a more engaging comeback for Black Adam. However, the director hasn’t shared any thoughts on prioritizing the character and his comeback, but it would be intriguing to witness a new narrative crafted at the hands of James Gunn.

Despite the original film’s box-office reception, there were plans to release Black Adam 2. But due to the challenges and changes at the studios, Dwayne Johnson’s film never saw the light of the day. The Fast and Furious star mentioned during a conversation with Kevin Hart, that Black Adam was affected by COVID-19, and added:

“As we were creating Black Adam, developing it, shooting [it] — we got knocked down a little bit because of COVID and the shutdowns, got back up — there were so many changes in leadership…  you have people coming in who creatively, fiscally, are gonna make decisions that you may not agree with philosophically.”

While explaining that despite the challenges faced due to the pandemic, Black Adam found a way out. However, things turned difficult again as there were creative changes that didn’t sit well compared to the previous plan for the film. The actor also talked about the canceled Black Adam 2 and said:

“That will always be one of the biggest mysteries, I think, not only for me and us on our end but also throughout our business.”

Even Dwayne Johnson was confused as to why the second film never happened while stating that it was abandoned due to a “vortex of new leadership.” However, now that the actor’s film has found a way to grab fans’ attention, we wonder how James Gunn will utilize this opportunity.

Black Adam is available on Netflix.
