Upon release, the miniseries received positive reviews from the critics as well as the audience.
The actors in the miniseries have been appreciated for their exceptional performances on the show. Matt Reeves reportedly supervised the writing for the show and was also involved in the hiring of the creative team. A recently shared theory that has got fans excited for what’s to come on the show next.
Is Sofia Falcone turning Oz’s mom against him on The Penguin?
The Penguin’s episode 7 titled Top Hat recently premiered on HBO and goes on to reveal Oz’s past to reveal what put the character on a trajectory that makes him the crime kingpin. Sofia Gigante (nee Falcone), who is shown as The Penguin’s main adversary, gets focused on two things: rise through the ranks of her family and take over her father’s empire. And secondly, take revenge on Oz for betraying her.
The episode gives the audience a flashback of how Oz lived with his mother, Francis, and brothers Benny and Jack. He does not get along with his brothers and wants to spend some time with her mother. Episode 7 is significant for the viewers to understand that their impulsive reaction to Oz for people stems from his childhood, where his brothers made fun of him, which eventually led to their deaths.
Showrunner Lauren LeFranc shared via Decider that there is impulsivity to Oz, which stems from when he’s made fun of, mocked, and laughed at. She added that adult Oz and young Oz are motivated by the same things. In another flashback, Oz, who sees Rex’s wad of cash, believes that the gangster life will finally lead him to be able to provide for his mother.
But now, a Reddit user has shared that it was assumed and believed that Sofia Gigante would kill Francis. But the theory mentioned that she is going to make Oz’s mother realize what exactly happened to Benny and Jack and let her hate Oz. A user replied,
Another user agrees, stating that it’s probably going to be very interesting, but added that what is that is combined with what she told Oz in Episode 6 about putting her out of her mind. They noted that Oz, who is driven by his insecurities, can make a misguided decision to kill her mother because he has lost the only thing he cares about at that moment. The user insisted that this can be seen as ‘if I can’t have her, no one can’.
A third user adding onto Sofia Gigante taking up the villain role and making Francis hate Oz, added that once she realizes what he did, she stops being his narcissistic supply and is now just a liability. Oz’s mother now holds the power to hurt him in ways no one can, and he’d just have to get rid of her to protect himself.
Fans have expressed that it’s one of the most mind-boggling theories coming from the miniseries. However, the last episode of The Penguin is yet to premiere, which will reveal if the theory comes true or not.
