“Bouncing a ball doesn’t make you a hero”: Brittney Griner Release Angers Comedian Terrence Williams, Claims US Marine Should’ve Been Prioritized Over Basketball Player
WNBA player Brittney Griner is finally back home in the United States after a long 10 months behind Russian bars. Needless to say, this is a matter of great relief for many people, Griner herself, her wife, the US diplomats and officials who made this possible, President Joe Biden, and many many citizens who are rejoicing her return and heaving a sigh of relief. But there are a few like in every other case, who disagree. And in this case, it is comedian Terrence Williams, who thinks that the US government bestowed undue privilege on Griner.
Terrence Williams gives a lesson on the importance of soldiers and police officers
Terrence Williams is a conservative and that is universally known. He has a forte in approaching with a humorous take that social and political dynamics and making them the butt of his joke. This time around, however, he is in no mood to joke. He has a problem with Griner’s release and that is an indisputable fact. He took to Twitter to rant his rage out at the fact that the basketball player was preferred by the White House over former US Marine Paul Whelan. Whelan has been detained in Russia since 2018, and 4 years is definitely a much longer time than 10 months, the time Griner spent in jail. He tweeted,
“Come on, first of all, let’s get something straight. Brittney Griner is not a hero. Bouncing a ball does not make you a hero. Bouncing a ball does not make you a role model. So, the White House can miss me for all that cr*p. They left the marine behind. The marine should have been the first one to come home, the marine is the one who put his life on the line for this country. The marine is the one who put his life on the line for me and you and for Brittney. He should have been the first one on that plane back home.”
Williams’ line of reasoning suggests that a soldier should’ve been the government’s priority instead of a sportsperson.
The dark side of the exchange shows quite a different story
He then went on to even briefly describe Griner in his tweet. He suggested that she has in the past disrespected the US flag, and thus has hard and brittle feelings against the country itself. He went on to write,
