Quentin Tarantino has revealed that his next and supposedly final film as a director will be The Movie Critic. While casting details remain uncertain, there is speculation that Tarantino’s frequent collaborator Brad Pitt may reunite with the acclaimed filmmaker for this project as Tarantino ditched Leonardo DiCaprio.

Pitt previously worked with Tarantino on the hits Inglourious Basterds (2009) and Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood (2019). The latter earned Pitt his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of stuntman Cliff Booth. Given their successful track record, Tarantino tapping Pitt to lead The Movie Critic would make perfect sense.

What Do We Know About The Movie Critic So Far?

In an interview with Deadline at Cannes, Quentin Tarantino disclosed that The Movie Critic will be set in 1970s California and center around a man who wrote film reviews for adult magazines back then. The director had a similar job early in his career.

“It’s based on a guy who really lived but was never really famous, and he used to write movie reviews for a porno rag,” Tarantino revealed.

Since giving that interview, Tarantino has apparently done significant rewrites on the script. So, additional details that have emerged may further shape expectations for the final film. All that’s certain so far is that it will take audiences back to the era that influenced Tarantino’s filmmaking perspective.

Could Brad Pitt Play The Title Character?

Tarantino has not specified if Brad Pitt or any other actor is in talks for the lead role, but reports claim that Leonardo DiCaprio was in talks. But if Pitt does sign on, playing the critic who reviews X-rated movies would be a change of pace from his past Tarantino parts.

The writer-director has demonstrated a knack for getting compelling performances out of Pitt over their decade-plus collaboration. Portraying a potentially complex lead character like the critic could let Pitt sink his teeth into a meatier part than the more physical supporting turns he had in Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Of course, Tarantino crafting another memorable role for Pitt would excite their many shared fans. And it would be a fitting culmination of their work together if Pitt leads Tarantino’s Swan Song.

Sony Pictures backed Once Upon A Time In Hollywood when other studios allegedly wanted Tarantino to edit out controversial scenes, like Cliff Booth’s fight with Bruce Lee. The film still turned a profit without playing in China.

Given that positive experience, Tarantino may stick with Sony for his finale. Their partnership on The Movie Critic would promise the creative freedom Tarantino expects at this late stage of his directing career.
