As Marvel Studios kicks off 2024, all eyes are on the upcoming reboot series Daredevil: Born Again to potentially turn the tide after a rocky phase of Disney+ shows. By bringing back the gritty street-level heroes from Netflix’s Marvel universe, could Born Again put Marvel back in fans’ good graces? Fans have been pushing Marvel to “bring back Jessica Jones” and maybe this time Marvel will listen to them. Marvel pressed pause on filming Daredevil: Born Again over the summer for creative reasons. After reviewing footage, execs decided to steer the show away from a legal procedural approach and make it darker and more violent in tone – harkening back to the acclaimed Netflix Daredevil series.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, original Daredevil stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are reprising their roles as the title hero and villain Kingpin. Fight coordinator Philip Silvera, who worked on the Netflix show, has been brought in to orchestrate Born Again’s stunts and action.

There are also rumors that Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson may reprise their roles from Netflix’s Daredevil, restoring Matt Murdock’s full supporting cast. This renewed focus on street-level superheroics indicates Marvel is courting fans of the previous incarnation.

Recent Marvel series, like She-Hulk, have received criticism for weak storytelling and overly comedic tones compared to the Netflix Marvel universe. Shows like Loki and Moon Knight, while generally better received, failed to truly grip fans the way Daredevil and The Punisher did.

By bringing Daredevil back to his gritty roots after a lackluster guest spot in She-Hulk, Marvel seems to be acknowledging complaints about the Disney+ slate. The tone and violence harkening back to Netflix suggests they aim to satisfy fans craving those more grounded, intense stories.

Daredevil also benefits from having a history and built-in fanbase thanks to the popular Netflix seasons. This gives Born Again a leg up in exciting fans compared to entirely new characters like Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk.

So far, reaction to Born Again‘s darker direction and the return of Marvel-Netflix players like Daredevil, Kingpin, and the Punisher has been overwhelmingly positive. These characters deliver the street-level, R-rated superheroics that many feel have been lacking from Disney+’s more family-friendly fare. Fans have been very persistent about their suggestion of Jessica Jones:

The revival of the Netflix universe also benefits secondary shows like Echo, which saw a viewership boost thanks to its Kingpin cameo teasing Born Again. This indicates renewed interest in the grittier Defenders characters permeating the Marvel slate.

The wrestling of control over these characters away from ineffective Disney+ stewardship might just pay off.
