Cannes Film Festival Chief Doesn’t Give a Damn about Johnny Depp Clashing With Female Director: “He’s extraordinary”
Johnny Depp is a magnificent actor who has earned several critically acclaimed awards for his acting brilliance and striking screen presence. Depp had a booming career in the entertainment industry, but his legal battle with his former wife, Amber Heard, plagued his flourishing career in Hollywood.

Recently, Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Fremaux defended Johnny Depp’s comeback move at a star-studded event with his latest film, Jeanne du Barry, during a press conference.

While speaking with the journalist during a press conference, Cannes Film Festival Boss Thierry Fremaux was asked to address his opinion on the May 16 world premiere of Maiwenn’s movie Jeanne du Barry starring Depp as King Louis XV.
Fremaux said,
“I don’t know about the image of Johnny Depp in the U.S. To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule, it’s the freedom of thinking and the freedom of speech and acting within a legal framework.”
He continued,
“If Johnny Depp had been banned from acting in a film, or the film was banned, we wouldn’t be here talking about it. So we saw Maiwenn’s film, and it could have been in competition. She would have been the eighth female director. This controversy came up once the film was announced at Cannes because everybody knew Johnny had made a film in France…I don’t know why she chose him, but it’s a question you should ask Maiwenn.”
Fremaux added,
“As for the rest, I’m the last person to be able to discuss all this. If there’s one person in this world who didn’t find the least interest in this very publicized trial, it’s me. I don’t know what it’s about. I also care about Johnny Depp as an actor.”
Thierry Fremaux stated that he appreciates Johnny Depp as an actor but was least interested in his trial with Amber Heard. Depp and Heard met on the set of The Rum Diary in 2011 and became good friends. The former couple separated in 2016 with a divorce settlement of $7 million. Things turned sour when Amber Heard penned an op-ed in 2018 for the Washington Post, after which the actor sued his former wife under a defamation lawsuit. He won the case and received $15 million in damages.
