Chris Evans Knew Who Would Replace Him as Captain America While Shooting Avengers: Endgame
- Chris Evans exited the Marvel universe as Captain America in Avengers: Endgame.
- After Evans, Anthony Mackie took up the shield and became the first black Captain America.
- In a recent interview, Mackie shared how he found out from Evans that he was going to be the next Captain America.
It’s been five years since Avengers: Endgame hit the theatres and we saw all of the Avengers together. The team was disbanded after the iconic battle. And the fans were left disheartened by Iron Man’s (Robert Downey Jr.) and Black Widow’s (Scarlett Johansson) demise. Before Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) could retire, he handed over his shield to Sam Wilson aka Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie), and made him the next Captain America in the last sequence of Endgame.
However, Mackie didn’t know about this shift and thought that the fan-favorite character Falcon would be killed in Endgame because of ‘racial bias’. So, do you know from whom he learned the actual truth? Well, it was Chris Evans. Yes, that’s right. In a recent interview, the Captain America: Civil War actor recalled the incident and shared how excited they were.
Chris Evans knew who would become the next Captain America
Before anyone from the OG star cast of the Avengers: Endgame, it was Chris Evans who knew that Anthony Mackie would become the next Captain America. Mackie got to know about it from Evans. They were at the Ghosted actor’s house when he disclosed the fact. Despite having Endgame’s script, Mackie hadn’t gone through it until Evans handed him the last 10 pages.
In a recent interview with Fandango, Mackie recalled the day he realized he was the next big thing in the MCU. Talking about how Chris Evans took him to his workspace in the basement and unraveled it, he said,
He gets the new script, he goes to the last ten pages and he goes, ‘Read it.’ So, me, thinking they killed me off, he’s just looking at me like, ‘Huh?’… I’, like, ‘So why did you give me the shield?’ He’s like, ‘Because you’re f–king Captain America.’
After learning about it, both actors couldn’t control their excitement. As Mackie explained, they were jumping, high-fiving, and hugging each other just like ’12-year-olds’.
Anthony Mackie revealed what he thought his character Falcon’s fate would be
In the same interview, when Anthony Mackie was sharing how Chris Evans disclosed the script to him, he shared that he had no idea that he would become the first black Cap. One day while at Evans’ house, when the actor asked him whether he had gone through the last few pages of Endgame, Mackie being Mackie, thought his then-character Falcon would die by the end of it. Recalling the moment, he shared,
You know, being black, I’m like ‘Imma die, Damn!’ They’re getting rid of me, man. I don’t even cause no trouble. I stand in the back, I don’t bother nobody, right?
But that was not the case. So, when he finally read the pages and understood what was about to happen, Mackie was over the moon. This incident became even more special because he got to share it with the OG Captain America.
As soon as the video clip went viral on the internet, it sparked a lot of reactions from netizens. Here’s what they are posting on X (previously known as Twitter):
Well, Anthony Mackie’s first feature film, Captain America: Brave New World, will be released in theatres on February 14, 2025.
