Chris Evans has done some terrific movies in his career. From Gifted, Knives Out, to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, he is known for his tremendous versatility. However, if there is one character that will always be synonymous with Chris Evans, it is that of Captain America from the MCU. He is also famously known for playing the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movie before becoming Captain America.

However, the actor’s personal favorite is a criminally underrated yet critically acclaimed movie that he did with Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, and Michelle Yeoh. The movie is none other than Danny Boyle’s Sunshine, released in 2007. Although, even after a decade, it is seen as one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, it barely made any waves at the time when it was released. According to a 2011 Chris Evans interview, his career would have taken a completely different trajectory if Sunshine had succeeded at the box office.

Chris Evans might not have been Captain America if Sunshine had not Bombed at the box office

Danny Boyle’s Sunshine became one of those sci-fi films that hit cult classic status with age. It only opened in about 10 theatres and had a budget of a mere $40 million, which is considerably low for a sci-fi movie, especially if one wants to include CGI and a lot of fight scenes. Chris Evans later seemed pretty heartbroken about it in a 2011 interview with Moviefone. He told the interviewer that it was his favorite film, saying:

“I love ‘Sunshine.’”

When the interviewer remarked that more people should see the iconic sci-fi, he went on to say:

“I know, man. Like ten people saw it. All my good movies, nobody sees. Everybody goes and sees ‘Fantastic Four,’ but nobody sees ‘Sunshine.’ I’d have a different career if people saw that. I love that movie, man. I love Danny Boyle. I love that experience and I love that cast. That was one of those movies, top to bottom, I’m just in love with.”

When The Spaceshipper posted this on X (formerly Twitter), many people came out to proclaim their love for the movie:

It is truly one of Chris Evans’ finest performances. While Sunshine and Chris Evans, along with Cillian Murphy and Michelle Yeoh, got rave reviews from critics, the movie failed commercially, making only $5 million over budget.

Chris Evans breaks silence on the OG Avengers returning to the MCU

Captain America is a role that will always define Chris Evans and his filmography due to its insane popularity. His journey seemed to have ended with Avengers: Endgame. However, recently, reports emerged via The Hollywood Reporter that Marvel is planning to get the original Avengers together for an upcoming project. Given how most big-budget Marvel projects, including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, are failing on the big screen, many fans believed that Marvel might make this happen as a desperate attempt to recreate its Avengers glory days.

Chris Evans recently appeared on The View, and when asked about the reports, he had a laugh at them, saying:

“You know, I always see those reports too, and it’s news to me. I think every couple months, someone says that they’re getting Downey, and Hemsworth, and Scarlet, and everyone’s coming back! No one’s spoken to me about it. And look, I would never say never, but I really — I’m very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”

However, as one can see, he did not outright deny the reports, giving fans hope that he might return if the project is perfect.

All these rumors are speculation at the moment. Meanwhile, the audience can enjoy the Avengers movies on Disney+.

Frequently asked questions

What is the $40 million movie with Cillian Murphy that Chris Evans says bombed?

It is Sunshine (2007), Danny Boyle’s science-fiction film starring Chris Evans alongside Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, and Michelle Yeoh. Made on a roughly $40 million budget and opening in only about 10 theaters, it earned strong reviews and later cult-classic status but failed commercially. In a 2011 Moviefone interview Evans called it his favorite film and said, ‘Like ten people saw it. All my good movies, nobody sees,’ adding, ‘I’d have a different career if people saw that.’

How did Sunshine’s box-office failure connect to Chris Evans joining Marvel?

The article frames it as a turning point rather than a proven cause. Evans noted in the 2011 interview that his career would have taken a completely different trajectory if Sunshine had succeeded at the box office. Because that film and other acclaimed projects went largely unseen while Fantastic Four drew crowds, his path led toward bigger commercial roles, ultimately Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The connection is the article’s interpretation of Evans’ own reflection, not an official statement that the flop caused his casting.

What Marvel roles did Chris Evans play, and when did Sunshine come out relative to them?

Before Captain America, Evans played the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four films, then went on to play Steve Rogers / Captain America across the Avengers movies and the Captain America trilogy in the MCU. Sunshine was released in 2007, before that Captain America run, which is why the article presents the film’s 2007 commercial failure as an early career moment that helped steer Evans toward the franchise that now defines him.
