Cillian Murphy portrayed the villain Scarecrow across all three Dark Knight movies directed by Christopher Nolan. But behind the scenes, Gary Oldman, in a recent appearance on Happy Sad Confused, described Murphy as being the complete opposite of his sinister on-screen persona. In Oldman’s own words:

“Cillian Murphy is the one of the most this sweetest guy on Earth. He is such a lovely man and I knew I’d cross paths with him from the Batman, um and uh, and I, Chris said ‘You want to come in for a day and do this?’ and I said ‘Sure, great, you know.’ Um, and I had the scene with just Cillian. It was terrific but I did not know where it was in the shooting or anything like that. I, I, I maybe if I had known just the sheer scale of it.”

While talking about his experience working with Murphy, Oldman said,

“And I, um, I may have been a little more intimidated. I don’t, right, you know? But it was just a man talking to another man in a room, right? You know, so it was very sort of intimate interior. Um, and then you see where it, where it falls in the thing but that again was, um, Chris just said he trusted me to put it together.”

Oldman went on to share that he didn’t know Murphy had been cast as Scarecrow when they first interacted on the set of Batman Begins. If he had realized the massive scale of the production and Murphy’s prominent role as the villain, Oldman admitted he might have felt more nervous about their scene together.

But Murphy’s friendly and down-to-earth nature instantly put Oldman at ease. Their one-on-one scene felt like an intimate dialogue between two actors rather than a clash between hero and villain.
