Doctor Who actor Christopher Eccleston plans to return to the show on its 60th anniversary. The actor, who played the ninth doctor noted a few conditions for his return to the role at For The Love of Sci-Fi 2023, which his former co-star, Billie Piper also attended.

The actor states that he will return to the BBC series only if a few executive producers get “sacked” from the project. The executives that the actor was talking about included the likes of Russell T Davies, Jane Tranter, Phil Collinson, and Julie Gardner. 

Doctor who is a British science fiction series running since 1963. The show’s creators include  Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber, and Donald Wilson. The plot depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called ‘The Doctor,’ a non-resident of Earth with a human appearance. Doctors across the universe use a time-space traveling machine called TARDIS, which looks like a telephone booth.

Christopher Eccleston joined the BBC series in 2005 and garnered immediate attention.  He led the show before giving the TARDIS key to David Tennant, who joined as the tenth doctor from 2005 to 2010.

The executives whom the Accused actor named in his conditions were working with him in the sci-fi show back then and left that project in 2009. And now they reunited for the show’s 60th anniversary special, where Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter founded their production company named “Bad Wolf” for the series. The Doctor Who star did give hints on the reason behind his departure from the series, where he accused Russell T Davis of his way of working, calling him the “mess” in the production. This reveals that there were creative differences between the actors and the showrunners back then. 

When he was asked if he likes to get his name linked with the show, he said that he “loves being associated” with the show except for the fact that he is disinterested in getting associated with the team and the “politics” behind it.

Post his departure from the 2005 BBC show, Eccleston appeared in the 2006 television film Perfect Parents as ‘Stuart.’ Followed by NBC’s television show, Heroes in 2007. Since then, the actor has been actively working in TV and also in films simultaneously. The popular shows he has been in are Accused in 2010, and The Leftovers (from 2014 to 2017).

Other than that, his filmography includes The Seeker in 2007, followed by New Orleans, Mon Amour (2008), G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009), Amelia(2009), Song For Marion (2012), and Legend in 2015. One of the most popular names in the ninth doctor’s actor is Thor: The Dark World (2013), where he appeared as Malekith.
