Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ Becomes His First R-rated Movie in 20 Years Since Al Pacino’s ‘Insomnia’
Hollywood director Christopher Nolan’s career is undeniably filled with excellent projects. Each of his movies has been so carefully directed that even the soundtracks seem to have a specific and significant role to play in the delivery.
But even though a lot of his movies have mature content focusing on the darker sides of society, as in The Dark Knight trilogy or even Dunkirk somehow Nolan stays away from getting an R rating.
Except for two of his films, all of the others on the list come under PG-13 despite the stories involving violence. However, for the first time since his 2002 Insomnia, the director’s upcoming film Oppenheimer is so reported to be R-rated.
Christopher Nolan Giving an R-rated Movie After 20 Years
There is no doubt that the upcoming Christopher Nolan-directed Oppenheimer is one of the most-anticipated films of this year. Nolan has a good reputation when it comes to giving out memorable and excellent projects. And it gets clear once one watches his films that each aspect of the movies has been carefully crafted to bring out the best possible scenario.

Whether it be the soundtracks or the more technical CGIs, they are applied most effectively. However, if there is one thing that Nolan stays away from the most is getting an R-rating for his movies. Despite his films such as The Dark Knight trilogy which includes violence and even Dunkirk (a whole film based on a War), they have remained in the PG-13 zone.
Out of all the films of his career till now, only two, namely Memento (2000) and Insomnia (2002) received an R-rating. So breaking away from his usual PG-13 projects, Nolan is coming out with Oppenheimer which was recently reported to have received a R-Rating by the MPAA. That would make the upcoming film, the first R-Rated Nolan film in 20 years. The movie is also the longest one of all the projects running for 3 hours.
A Glimpse at The Upcoming Oppenheimer
Finally Christopher Nolan’s much-awaited film of the year Oppenheimer is about to come out. This is his first project since covid-19 pandemic. The film, as the name suggests is based on the physicist Robert J Oppenheimer and his work on the Manhattan Project which ultimately led to the creation of the atomic bomb during the world war II era.
Starring Cillian Murphy as the protagonist, Oppenheimer is the first project Nolan under Universal after parting ways with Warner Bros. It is slated to release on 21st July clashing with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, another highly-anticipated film of the year.
