Cillian Murphy Reveals His Favorite Oppenheimer Scene and it’s Not the Nuke Explosion
Christopher Nolan’s much-awaited documentary feature on J. Robert Oppenheimer is finally here and the movie about the atomic bomb is making plenty of noises.
Cillian Murphy is headlining the star cast that includes the likes of Robert Downey Jr. and Florence Pugh, and is tasked with bringing what went through the genius theoretical physicist’s mind and in his life onto the big screen.

Such is the importance of Murphy and his character, also known as the father of the atomic bomb, that Nolan, for the first time in his glorious career, wrote the script in the first person. As such it’s only wise to know what the Peaky Blinders star thinks about his work in the movie.
Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy Reveals His Favorite Scene From Nolan’s Movie
Much focus has been allotted to Christopher Nolan‘s decision to recreate an atomic explosion without the help of computer-generated imagery in the movie. In fact, apart from the individual brilliance of the director himself and his incredible cast, the biggest selling point for Oppenheimer has been this specific scene that depicts what happened in New Mexico in July 1945.
However, as far as Cillian Murphy‘s opinion is concerned, that explosion scene wasn’t the most impressive part of the movie. Instead, the 47-year-old was taken aback and impressed with the experience of shooting a court-hearing sequence. He said:
“The section of the movie that I loved working on the most was the section in the room, in 2022, when we were all in the hearing. We shot in this tiny, sh**ty little room. There weren’t any moveable walls or anything like that; it was just all of us in there with this huge camera. That felt almost like doing a play.”
The scene Murphy is talking about is inspired by Oppenheimer’s security hearing in 1954. In the controversial four-week hearing, questions were raised about his loyalties and political affiliations, which ultimately lead to the revoking of his clearance. The actor said he found filming the scene very emotional and heavy.
What Is the Most Controversial Scene From Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer?
While the atomic explosion bereft of CGI attracted the audience to the theatres and the court-hearing impressed Murphy during the filming, a controversial s*x scene in the movie has garnered more talks than any other particular scene following the movie’s release on the 21st of July.
Oppenheimer became Nolan’s first movie in two decades to get an R-rating. As such many were expecting some level of n*dity and s*xual scenes in the movie.
However, in his bid to display the passionate relationship of J Robert Oppenheimer and Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh), Nolan ended up offending some of his Indian viewers by featuring the Bhagavad Gita during the character’s intercourse.
Regardless, as far as the Indian subcontinent is concerned, Oppenheimer has performed well and even outperformed Barbie – which isn’t the case in the USA and Canada.
