Creature Commandos, a new animated series from DC Studios, is making waves—and for good reason. It’s the first show in the new DC Universe (DCU), and people can’t stop talking about it. But what makes this show extra special?
Aside from the monsters, action, and dark humor, there’s also a Gunn family connection. Yep, James Gunn, the mastermind behind Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, isn’t the only Gunn involved in this project.
His brother is also a key player in Creature Commandos, and not just in one role—he’s actually voicing two important characters. Let’s break it all down, because it’s way cooler than you might think.
Who is James Gunn’s Brother Playing in Creature Commandos?
Well, Sean Gunn, the younger brother of James Gunn, is the one playing not one but two characters in Creature Commandos. While James is known for creating big, bold superhero movies, Sean has always been in the background doing his own thing—but trust us, he’s no less important.
Sean is a multi-talented actor, known for his versatility. He’s been working in Hollywood for decades and has shown that he can do pretty much anything.
He’s not just an actor you’ll see on screen—he’s also a pro at motion capture and voice acting. You’ve probably seen him in big projects, even if you didn’t know it. He’s been in all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies, where he plays Kraglin, a member of the Ravagers.
Outside of superhero films, Sean has appeared in a ton of indie films, TV shows, and even some of his brother’s earlier projects. But now, in Creature Commandos, he’s stepping into two huge roles at once.
What Characters Does Sean Gunn Play in Creature Commandos?
In Creature Commandos, Sean Gunn isn’t just voicing one character. Oh no, he’s doubling down and playing not one, but two major characters. And when we say major, we mean they are both important members of the Creature Commandos team. So, let’s meet these characters, shall we?
1. Weasel
First up, we have Weasel, an animalistic metahuman and a member of the Creature Commandos. He has a crazy backstory—originally part of Task Force X (a.k.a. The Suicide Squad). Weasel isn’t your typical hero.
While he doesn’t say much (if anything at all), he definitely has a strong presence. In an interview with Nerdist, Sean said that in The Suicide Squad, the character is mostly there for laughs—a goofy, crazy presence. Fans often tell him how much they love him and how hilarious he is. However, the actor added:
Just wait until you see Creature Commandos, because you’ll see something entirely new.
When it comes to playing Weasel, Sean feels like he has fewer tools to work with because all he’s got are grunts, squawks, and squeals. But he still tries to bring some emotion through all that.
James always described Weasel like a big dog, and if you’ve had a dog, you know they go through a lot of emotions—happy, sad, frustrated, angry, all of it. Sean uses that to figure out what Weasel’s feeling. Sean also stated that it’s “some of the most challenging acting work” he’s ever done.
2. G.I. Robot
Next up, we’ve got G.I. Robot. Now this is a completely different character, and that’s what makes it so exciting. G.I. Robot is a military android with a serious backstory. He served in World War II, and then, many years later, became a member of the Creature Commandos. Unlike Weasel, G.I. Robot has a lot more to say and a much more serious presence.
What makes this character interesting is that Sean has to bring him to life in a totally different way compared to Weasel. In the same interview, when asked what inspired him to play G.I. Robot as both a tough, Nazi-hating character and a sweet, earnest one, the star replied:
I’m always aware that when I play any character, they have to live inside me somewhere. I don’t want to stretch too far away from what feels natural. I didn’t want to make them sound too mechanical, but I was trying to think of how they would program a robot voice at that time.
He didn’t want the voice to sound too stiff, so he listened to old newsreels for inspiration. After testing it with James, they worked on it more in the booth, and it just clicked. Sean really enjoy playing a robot with a little humanity trying to break through, instead of just being all metal.
Sean Gunn has Already Collaborated with James Gunn on Many Projects
James and Sean Gunn are the ultimate sibling duo in Hollywood. The two have worked together for years, and Sean has had a major presence in many of James’ projects. It’s clear that the brothers have a special bond, and it shows in their work.
They seem to have a natural chemistry, which makes their collaborations so enjoyable to watch. If you’ve seen the Guardians of the Galaxy films, you’ll know Sean plays Kraglin, one of Yondu’s loyal crew members.
He’s been in all three Guardians movies, plus the Holiday Special, playing the same character each time. Kraglin is kind of the goofy, lovable guy who doesn’t always get it right, but you can’t help but root for him. Sean has really made this role his own.
But it’s not just Marvel where the Gunn brothers have teamed up. Sean also appeared in The Suicide Squad (2021), where he played the very strange (and very hilarious) character Weasel. His role wasn’t huge, but Sean made the character unforgettable.
And of course, Sean has been involved in other projects (for which his brother wrote the screenplays). He’s appeared in movies like The Belko Experiment (2016), Tromeo and Juliet (1996), and even TV shows like PG Porn (2008). The two brothers have always worked well together. In an interview with io9, the 50-year-old said:
I am always eager to work with my brother on whatever projects come up, you know? I know he and I will never stop working together.
It’s clear that Sean’s versatility and ability to play all sorts of characters make him the perfect choice for roles like Weasel and G.I. Robot in Creature Commandos.
They’ve truly created a synergy over the years that makes their collaborations feel effortless. And with Creature Commandos under their belts, it looks like they’re not slowing down anytime soon.
