Creature Commandos: James Gunn May Have Let His Fantasies Run Too Wild With 2 Characters as Fans Catch On to Alleged Real-Life Inspirations
- Creature Commandos characters are reportedly inspired from real life.
- Fans are however not happy if this speculation is true.
- Creature Commandos is streaming on Max and season one concludes on January 9, 2025.
Created by James Gunn, the action-adventure adult animated superhero series Creature Commandos is based on the characters from DC Comics. The series serves as the first television series and first installment in the DC Universe. Creature Commandos follows black ops, a team of monsters assembled by Amanda Waller. Dean Lorey serves as the showrunner while Gunn wrote all seven episodes of the show.
Creature Commandos features an ensemble cast of Indira Varma, Sean Gunn, Frank Grillo, David Harbour, and more. Upon release, the series received a positive response from critics and the audience. The show has been praised for its voice performances by the actors, animation, and James Gunn’s storytelling. The show was renewed for a second season in December 2023, but fans have caught up on two characters for which they believe James Gunn went a little too far with his storytelling.
Creature Commandos’ fans compare Rick Flag Sr. and Princess to James Gunn and his wife
The action-adventure show Creature Commandos features Rick Flag Sr., by Frank Grillo, and Maria Bakalova voices Princess Ilana Rostovic. According to The Direct, Bakalova was the first artist to be finalized for the series, and during the panel of DC Studios’ Creature Commandos at New York Comic-Con, James Gunn confirmed and shared,
Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. is one of the most significant characters in the series, and fans love the actor in the role. Yahoo mentioned that James Gunn had stated that he had wanted to work with Grillo for a long time as he spoke to him after he took over the reins of DC Studios, stating that they’d find something cool for him to do.
Frank Grillo had shared with ScreenRant that much of Rick Flag’s depiction is based on the actor’s real-life mannerisms. But fans have noticed how familiar Rick Flag Sr. and Princess look to James Gunn and his wife Jennifer Holland. An X user mentioned that someone had mentioned that this significant character on the show looked very much like and they cannot unsee it.
Another user pointed out that Rick Flag Sr. looks nothing like Frank Grillo, who voices the character. Another user mentioned that when Gunn was writing Rick Flag Sr., he had put himself in a certain position with a certain blonde person [his wife] to play out his fantasy. One of the major similarities between Gunn and Flag Sr., is the color of the hair, and then there is the beard.
James Gunn has white hair just like Rick Flag Sr., whereas Grillo has black hair. A third user mentioned this couldn’t be a coincidence. Fans are just baffled by the similarity and have expressed their disappointment in the director for ‘self-inserting’.
James Gunn talks about Batman’s cameo in Creature Commandos’ Episode 6
Episode 6 of Creature Commandos, Priyatel Skelet, goes on to explore the tragic backstory of Task Force M member Dr. Phosphorus. The final moments of the episode feature a silhouette of Batman for a split second on the roof of a club scene in Gotham.
Gunn spoke to Rotten Tomatoes and explained,
The co-CEO of DC Studio also added that he saw the scene as a great way to establish Batman’s existence as a well-known figure in this universe. He mentioned that he couldn’t wait for people to see more of Batman alongside Superman.
The season finale episode set to premiere on January 9, 2025, is going to have a post-credit scene, as Gunn confirmed on Threads.
